'94 80 w/ supercharger needs Premium fuel to run ??????

Another option for controlling detonation, assuming that you're not running lean, is a J&S Safeguard (aftermarket knock sensor that can do individual cylinder retard up to 20 degrees). This allows you to run maximum timing and let the closed loop knock sensor knock back timing to just under the detontation threshold of your motor in real time (in my case right around peak torque). They make units for 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 coil motors.

I just got a 2 channel vampire unit for my 3FE project. Haven't installed it yet but the wiring is very simple - coil positive, coil negative, ground and the knock sensor wires. The kit is very complete and even includes high quality AMP PIDG style wire terminals (crappy terminals are a pet peeve of mine).

Thanks for all the continued replys. At least I am learning that there are some options.

This SC80 is an auction item. Will have to see if it is me at the end:cool:

Then the fun can begin.

If it goes cheap enough, then I can keep the S10 for the DD and just play with the 80 and not make it the DD.

That would be mo better, ???.

I spent the day looking at a K3500 crew cab SRW. Found out it was a rebuilt wreck and a very likely rollback on the OD.
At least I did not buy it.

Was looking at it as a potential tow rig for a dedicated crawler.

There will be more.

Well its over. The fat lady can sing. I did not get the bid on the '94
SC 80. SDF.

I bid all the $$ my wife would let me play with.

I can't afford a 80 and an attorney/alimony so I let it go.

Only missed it by a couple of hundred at the very end. :crybaby:

There will be more.

This has been a very educational thread. Thanks to all that helped me understand more about the 80's and SC's.

I will prevail.

Keep looking for a 95-97. I hear a rumor that a new SC is coming out

Coming back to northern California from LA this morning taught me something that's valuable about driving an 80.

Don't drive excessively fast, and don't do a whole ton of in-town driving.

From LA to about half way back to Sonoma, I drove pretty fast, high to low 80s.

And once when I wasn't paying attention I ended up going 105MPH. Oops.

So I get to the gas station with 91 octane costing $3.71, and fill up around 20 gallons.

Except I had only driven about 220 miles. About 11 MPG. I don't remember the exact figures, but they're very similar.

Which is what you're supposed to get in the city. This is 200 miles of freeway. Mostly flat freeway.

I drove the rest of the way up, about another 200 miles going the speed limit of 70.

And I still have half a tank left. About 12.5 gallons. That's around 16 MPG.

So just don't drive excessively fast, and don't drive in town a lot and you won't have a ton of problems.

I can still put 91 octane in my tank and I don't have a job right now. :D

Don't quit your job while trying to pay for LC gas. Because you'll end up having to sell everything you own.

TRD Supercharger - Trends

Keep looking for a 95-97. I hear a rumor that a new SC is coming out

It would appear TRD is changing over to the Eaton TVS series of Superchargers
http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/Produ...m?ssSourceNodeId=5334&ssSourceSiteId=EatonCom

The Aussies already have it in the Aurion (Camry)
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/20/toyota-australia-launches-trd-aurion-with-323-h/

The R1320 or R1650 looks to be about where the 80 should fit in terms of sizing. That said, it sure looks like TRD will need to go thru all 'old' Eaton SC applications with CARB re-certification since the dictated pulley diameter will likely change. That could take a while for the lineup, and I suspect the 80 won't be at the front of that list.

These new TVS superchargers should allow for a LOT of HP headroom in tuning the 80, if TRD does get around to it....

Thanks, I originally was looking for a '96-'97. Then this evilbay deal on a '94 SC80 came up and caught my eye. Hope the winner of the bid enjoys it. It looked like a good deal.

I have learned a lot in this thread.....thanks.
Looks like I am back to where I was a few days ago.

The premium fuel is still a suprise. Looks like I need something else for my DD instead of a 80.

I think I am just going to hang around here for a while and continue my 80's education online.

When does the movie start ??

go for the deal

I will have to wait for another deal. This one on evilbay is history.

I look on ebay, auto trader, local paper almost daily.

Think I need to learn a bit more about the 80's from you more "experienced" folks before I jump in and buy one.

So right now this site is my garage. Thanks.
