So this is my second post here. Thanks to all of you who make this site what it is!

Anyways, when im driving in 1st, 2nd and 3rd everything is fine (95% of the time) but when it shifts in between 3rd and OD or when the torque converter (TC) locks up (i cant tell) BAM!!! it makes my toes cringe, it sounds so bad.. and you can feel it slam into gear. It doesnt matter how light i "feather" the gas or how hard i slam the pedal its the same.... If this happens a lot, I can smell burnt tranny fluid. I have a feeling its not a good sign but I was wondering...

If anyone knows what these symptoms mean and/or how i can further troubleshoot these problems.
Is my transmission going out?
What options do i have now?


FYI I have already put grease in all the u-joints in the drive axles
I plan on adjusting the kickdown cable in it to see if it will help with this issue but since i can smell the burnt tranny fluid in the cab and out, I have a suspicion that it will be a more involved fix...:bang:

Do adjust the cable.

Change out the fluid asap.
 
Yea, drain and refill ATF then adjust throttle cable (.5mm-1.5mm) between red boot and metal bead on wire.

Drain and refill capacity: aprox. 4.2 QT., err on underfill side (you can always add).

Torque drain nut: 19ft/lb

Don't forget the new aluminum crush washer on the drain plug.

On a positive note, I'm pretty sure to firm a shift is better than your tranny slipping.

Also your transmission is the a440f.

One of the things I like to do is drain whatever is in the transmission pan and put the drain plug back. Let the truck sit overnight and drain again. All of the fluid from the valve body will now be in the pan. It's a very passive way to get more of the old fluid out without opening up the system.

However you must fill the first 4 quarts and start the motor to pump the fluid out of the pan. If you continue to add fluid without starting, the pan will overflow and you will make a big mess.
 
SOLVED!

Thanks guys! It's nice to actually fix something ha! I adjusted the cable collar (tiny metal cylinder on cable) to about 1.5mm away from the orange/reddish boot at throttle fully closed.

If you ever do this, leave a big fat note on the dash gauges "DO NOT DRIVE" so that you don't forget to refill before you drive off. This is worse than leaving a pint or two of old fluid in the valve body. Just imagine needing to go out in the middle of the night and forgetting... Or if somebody else starts the truck...

Leaving the hood open helps too, if you park inside. And putting your case of ATF on the engine is a good reminder to fill before driving. Or on the drivers seat.

IMO it's better to simply drop the ATF once a year and not worry about the last pint. I've never actually seen dark ATF in any 80 or 100 that sees somewhat regular maintenance.
 
Bumping this.

What if the transmission shifts fine when truck is cold, but when tranny temps warm up, tranny shifts rough?
 
Change the fluid asap. The A440F shifts very smooth and no banging gears or hard shifts. I thought they were all like this until I recently put a low mileage A440F since my old one blew up. I could hardly tell it was shifting. So yes, a good A440F will shift very smoothly.

Land cruiser 1991

I just send my land to change all the seals but right now is shifting on high rpm 123 gear on 3000 rpm .!! The distributor was change also and they did the valve ajust .. transmission oil and filter was change
