Well I took my 2000 in for the 90K t-belt. Also told them to do the tensioners(I had new OEM for cheap), waterpump, t-stat, anit freeze, crank seal, drive belt.

I have not seen it yet(see below) but Toyota called and Mike told me, good call on doing the waterpump, it was just starting to leak at the pully and the weep hole, Mike asked if I knew that, I said nope, I just figured it was good to do the waterpump when doing the t-belt. I learned today that the waterpumps are aluminum not cast like a F-3fe pump. My parts guy said he has seen them start to leak at 30k on some Toyota.

So we were to pick it up today, then I got a call from Mike at Toyota, seems that somehow the tech droped something on the radiator and busted it...............so I am getting a free new OEM rad.......and a discount on the service work. Hey.........chit happens and I got no problem waiting one more day for a free rad :)

So, I would sudjest DO the waterpump when doing the t-belt.

Good info and good deal on that radiator! :D

I had them do the water pump on the '99 I just purchased. before taking the 25% TLCA parts discount that my dealer offers, the water pump replacement was quoted at around $350. I didn't think it would be that much since they were in there already but when they said if I waited to have it done it would be over $700 I decided it was better safe than sorry. They told me my pump was starting to leak as well. I have 109k on mine.

All these water pump, exhaust manifold, starter contact, and other misc. failures being reported around 100,000 miles are really discouraging. When you couple this with the fact the dealerships think your made of money because you own a LC as evidenced by charging $350 to replace a water pump when the pump cost $125 and only takes an extra quarter to half an hour labor when the timing belt is already off and I'm about ready to sell. I thought I was going to get away from this kind of crap by investing in a Toyota Land Cruiser but it appears I was mistaken.

Take heart, there was someone on here a couple weeks ago that had the original waterpump at ~190k w/no signs of impending failure when examined during timing belt change (IIRC). I know Pimp is saavy, but I am usually skeptical of dealer recommendations like that, but if you find a good independent mechanic, I doubt you will have to pay anywhere near $350 for the water pump R&R during a timing belt change.

JP:

It's no different than any other vehicle board I've ever been on and I've been on a TON of them. Automotive boards are ALL the same in this respect. Everyone panics when people report the same thing going out. All of the sudden "these parts weren't designed properly" and "_______ (insert mfg here) is going downhill and I don't know what's gonna happen with them" or "I'll never buy another ______". It's just that on this board it's usually around 90,000 before the first things begin to show. To me that says alot more positive than negative. If you want to sell the TLC because of things cropping up at 90k good luck finding a vehicle that on average will out do the reliability of the this vehicle. Without a shadow of a doubt, you will not be able to replace it with any other SUV out there and get better reliability.

Keep in mind the board is a place to get problems answered, not many get online to brag about getting good service out of their exhaust manifold, water pump, and starter contacts. I personally have had zero problems with any of the above mentioned and I've flown right by 100,000mi and plan to keep on cruisin'. I have had no reason to start a thread to this effect though because no one cares when things are going right. :D

think I was quoted .5-1 hour for the waterpump, and it was my choice(I supplied parts) to replace it even before they noticed it.

The water pump was my choice as well and ended up being less than $300. I spoke to the mechanic that did the service and he said there was a small amount of fluid visible but it really wasn't that bad. I just figured do it now while I have the extra cash and they're in there. I really don't anticipate any major mechanical problems for a long while after the 90k service. The vehicle is very tight and I'm happy with the purchase.

I don't think that there has been a single reported case of a water pump failure at such low miles. A few are replacing them at 90k because they are cheap to do when the T-belt is being replaced and we are enthusiasts who want perfect vehicles. The closest thing to a failure of a water pump on this board is a tiny sign of a leak in the weep hole on some pumps that were already being replaced (does the name indicate that the weeping might be normal?) .

Most of the exhaust manifold problems have been repaired under warranty. The starter contacts do seem to be a bigger issue but the problem and fix are known.

Some major manufacturers vehicle's burst into flames while turned off in the garage setting houses on fire because of cruise control problems and the warranty/recall fix is to cut out the cruise control and call you "someday" with a replacement. Makes starter contacts seem like a small issue to me.

Mr. Pimp,

How much was your 90k service, I am getting pretty close to mine and I want some idea how much it is with all the water pump and good stuff too.

paid $525+tax for the labor for all of it(but not the rad, dealer eated that) Not sure what the parts were.

I think I was quoted about $850 for parts and labor without doing the waterpump. Water pump was another $350 before discount.

the waterpump only runs about $120 and another .5-1 hours to install when doing the t-belt

Cool, that is right at what I had figured to pay. I will have to bring in my parts like I normally do, anyways.

I think I paid 270 for parts and labor on the water pump but that was with my TLCA 25% discount. You could probably get that through Cdan easy.
