I have a slee harness in both my 60 and 80. Am using 110/85 hella yellowstars in my 60, and the "apparently popular" 80w/100w hella's in my 80. Love the light. Like the rest of you, I totally recommend this mod. Only problem is that I've had two of the 80w bulbs blow after only a few hours of use. The first blew after about 5 minutes, and Dave at Susquehanna replaced it (like Slee, great customer service). After the second one blew, I asked about it, and received the message pasted in below. I promptly ordered a bunch of spares.


The industry accepted life of a standard wattage bulb is some 150-200
hours—and of course, some are going to fail earlier and some are going to
last your lifetime—Time to Fail is a standard bell curve around 150-200
hours. Typically, the life of a high wattage bulb is less than half that of
a standard wattage bulb—some are rated as low as 50 hours. It is heat and
vibration that kills any bulb and with a high wattage bulb, there is much
more heat resulting in a much softer filament which is much more susceptible
to vibration failure. When running high wattage bulbs in smaller lamps
designed for 55 watt bulbs, not only do you run the risk of cracking your
lens, you significantly reduce the normal life of the bulb.

In addition, the condition of your charging system can influence bulb life.
What is the voltage at the back of the bulb? Is the regulator allowing
spikes on the power? Beyond that, your habits can influence bulb life as
well—Do you turn your lights on before starting the engine? Do you turn the
lights off after shutting the engine off? Both actions will cause spikes
that can take out the bulbs prematurely. Even normal operation of high load
accessories like the air conditioning compressor or the heater fan, create
surges on the power when cycling on/off that reduce the life of a hot bulb.
This is especially the case with high wattage bulbs.
 
Okay, this was one of the posts that was lost, but I'm really interested in some feedback. I just got the upgrade harness and some Hella bulbs as recommended, but one of the latest post (also lost) raised an issue regarding the longevity of these bulbs (as little as 5 minutes to a month). What are you guys that have had this upgrade for a while seeing? It doesn't take long for blowing $10 bulbs to add up, plus the inconvenience factor.

I leave the headlight switch on all the time and have since '93. Despite this, I've gotten phenomenal bulb life. The first set of high outputs lasted 100,000 miles (I'll let someone do the math on bulb hours) and when they did go, they died within weeks of each other. I am also a heavy high beam user due to the rural area we live and the many thousands of miles of all night driving we do. I've used Hella bulbs for years with no life issues. I've tried PIAAs in other vehicles and they have pitifully short lives. PIAA did acknowledge a batch problem to their credit and sent me 3 bulbs. At any rate, you should do well with the Hella bulbs.

Doug - how yellow are the yellowstars? Are they simply slightly less white? If so, I would consider them but got the impression from the Rally site that they were more of an amber/yellow/foglight color. Wrong?

I have a pair of the Hella FF100 fogs, and the yellowstars are not nearly as yellow as they are. I've been trying them partly just for curiosity sake, and partly because of their supposed benefit in rain/snow/etc. I live in Seattle, and am often in the mountains in winter, so I thought I'd give them a try. I have not been in heavy snow in the dark, but in all other conditions (rain and fog) I can say that there is less glare than with standard white bulbs. Is it a huge deal - no. The upgraded harness and higher watt bulbs are a big deal, the yellowstars are nice but not critical.
