Original HG, 215,000 miles... Don't see many people PM'ing head gaskets, unless you are OCD PM head, which is, well, a lot of us!

cheers,

BTW, '94's with cloth seats definitely never break down...

Serious?! You mean the FZJ80's... (think '94 and above)...?

I've had a high of 19.7mpg, stock tires, no lift or armor and below 65 on the highway.
I now run 255/85's and have returned 18mpg corrected, still no lift but I do have sliders now.
This is certainly higher mpg's than most achieve but I am lighter, lower to the ground and I run higher tire pressures than the typical mudders on here.
The 1FZ has more head gasket failures than the 3FE more than likely due to dissimilar materials (iron block/aluminum head) and/or asbestos being banned as a headgasket material.
I have a 93 1fz with 240,000 miles

Like this guy:
1996 Toyota Land Cruiser with Head Gasket issue

There was another one in Denver here about a week ago - but he never returned my phone call...

That's anther thing - the demand for these trucks must be pretty steady as most of the people I contact about CL ads do NOT call or email back... Weird...

No mods, needs a headgasket at the minimum, and wants $3500....I bought mine last year, running, with lockers for $2300....I'm glad I bought at the bottom of the recession.....good luck.

so is the ifz in 94 and up models or 93 and up?

93-97 U.S. i believe.

Valve adjustments!?

After doing some reading on this site I'm starting to realize that the 1FE engine ('91/92) requires a manual valve adjustment (every 15K) while the 1FZ '93 and higher may not (auto-adjustment?).... is that correct?

Thx -
James

Valves...

Let me ask a question differently: do you have to adjust valves periodically in FJ80 '93 and higher?

Do they all take regular gas, or do the newer engines require premium fuel? Also, what kind of fuel economy on average could one expect from '92/3 vs '96/7?

James

I was told that since the 1fz-fe was a motor intended for use all over the world, it was designed to run well even on bad gas so regular is fine, although I switch between mid-grade and high-grade to keep things clean
