I haul a lot of weight, extra fuel tank, drawers, RTT, fridge, etc, etc...

463 miles on 51 gallons of fuel.

Much of that was in 4 low on trails and such, but man-o-man.

Anyone else fall into this category of crappy mileage?

It really hurts at $3.55 per gallon.

Cost me $181 to top off yesterday but I figured I better do it before we are at $4.

So you probably dont want to hear that I just got 345 miles out of a stock tank last week? Even I was amazed.

All stock - and the best reason I can think of as to why the mileage was so good was that I got caught in a bad snowstorm and had to drive 35 mph for about 3 hours
 
With a stock fuel tank, I am getting around 210 miles before I run out of fuel. I know, horrible!!:bang:

The lift, rack, heavy foot on pedal, bigger tires, etc etc etc its no wonder I get about 8 to 9 mpg. Geeze, and I was actually going to drive the beast (tomorrow) down to Disneyland.............its 345 miles one way. That would be almost 700 miles total, not including the drive around time etc....hhhmmmm, I think I will take the tacoma now. :frown:
 
bah! I did 4 mpg playing in sand dunes at Pismo... :D

Holy crap........Im afraid if I played in the sand dunes I would be pulling negative numbers. Hell, I would be putting gas in the beast even before I started it after filling it up. Is that even possible? :crybaby:
 
Has anyone here tried "pulse and glide" technique?

Driving technique: exploring 'Pulse and Glide' - MetroMPG.com

Pulse and glide works like this: let's say you're on a road where you want to go 60 km/h. Instead of driving along at a steady 60, you instead accelerate to 70 (that's the pulse), and then coast in neutral with the engine off down to 50 (that's the glide). That's it. Rinse and repeat. And repeat. And repeat...

Upgrade to a 100, we are all getting 13-16 depending on mod's... ok, I'd better get the hell out of the 80 forum now... cheers

Seriously, I once got 20.4 mpg on a run from Mammoth down to Ridgecrest. (Filled up just before I left Mammoth, filled up the next morning in R/C, and did the math.) ~5000ft elevation change over about 200 miles, plus taking it nice and easy.

I always hesitate to post it up, 'cause I figure no one will believe me. :D

Oh, and if you think about it, I actually wasted money by filling up in Mammoth since it's so expensive there and I still had half a tank or so, but I just really wanted to try it as an experiment.

I did get 20+ once with the 100, that was in the winter around Flagstaff. Musta been some weird high altitude winter formulation or something.

Or of course, some paranormal thing having to do with the Grand Canyon Mother Earth focalization of ancestral spirits... Bet they get 30 mpg routinely in Sedona if that works already around Flagstaff... :)

Dude, you can't expect to get 15 miles per gallon when you are in low range part of the time...
 
Offroad doesn't count.

I never get worse than 12 onroad, and if I have the patience to leave it at 65 mph, I get near 15 mpg on my sticky 35's with 5.29's. This is one reason I have a CAT (cargo area tent), and have added no material weight in building my 80.

But hey, they are sending Dick Cheney to the Middle East to get oil prices down so don't worry, it will be better soon.

As my rig sits the best ever was 12.4 on the very last tank I had and the worst was 7.7 most likely on one of the McGrew runs while mostly in 4 low. My average over the last 40 tanks is 9.87 which is mostly around town and off road, I don't hit the highway much. I am still planning on having my injectors cleaned and maybe pulling .5 to 1 mpg better if I'm lucky. I will wait for Curtis to offer to come over and help pull them for me =)
 
I drove the Beagle chariot across country from CA to MI. On the way back it had all my camping gear just they way you saw it at SnT plus 2 Dana 60 front ends in the back and a crap load of trail spares.

14.8mph was the average for the entire trip. MI, IL, WI, IA, NE, UT were the "High Mileage" states. CO, NV and CA sucked it down since I was going up hill.



Now do you really want to trade your rig for the Beagle Chariot?


And yes I realize it is a FJ60 but it was built in the 80's so that qualifies it to be in the 80's tech section. :flipoff2:
