Hi All:

Probably my first post in this section - I have a FJ40 as my trail rig. :cheers:

Looking at buying a 1989 Toyota 4wd extra-cab pick-up, listed at $4,000. Good shape inside and out, 22RE with five speed tranny, AC and CD player. Mileage about 139K.

Any thoughts or comments on this? Worth $4K? Anything I should look for on this year of p/u?

Offhand, 4K sounds steep to me. I'm not sure about the Seattle market, but I'd generally pin that at 3K or so.

Does it have ADD (Automatic Disconnecting Differential)? Or does it have lockout Aisin's? I believe that all 22R-E/ADD trucks had the G series transmission, which isn't as good as the W56 (mine did).

It is a great truck though. The 22R-E is tops in my book for a gasoline engine, and that platform is a really well rounded vehicle. While I'd prefer SAS to the IFS, the IFS is more than enough to get me nearly everywhere I've ever wanted to go.

If it's really cherry, with that mileage 4K might be about right. If so, you should snap it up, because it won't last long.

Like DanS said, that sounds a little steep for that year/model but if it is straight, clean inside and out and the undercarriage is clean, sounds like a solid truck. I would avoid the ADD though swapping the hubs is not a big deal. The G series transmissions are not bad by any means either but no w56

140K sounds a little high for that price tag but a 22RE that is taken care of will easily push 300K no sweat. I would say if it meets the straightness requirements and clean undercarriage/engine offer em 3500. That sounds very fair in my opinion.
 
It's hard to say, honestly. If it was in mint condition, no rust, good maintenance records, etc, then ya I can see it fetching $4K in the New England area. Don't know your market though.

The 22RE is much preferable to the 3VZ V6, IMO. I could be wrong, but I thought only the older carb'd 22R's got the G-series tranny? I thought the 22RE's were all W56, but I may be wrong. It's worth a peek at the VIN plate on the door jamb, see what it says.

I thought the same until I went to bolt my 2LT-E to the W56 in my truck, only to realize that it was a G58 in there (which turned out to be a great thing--made the decision to use the R150f an easy one).

The 22R-E trucks with ADD were given the G series from what I've seen here, on Pirate and Marlin. Even if you do have the ADD, I'd make sure to swap in the lockout Aisins. Easy to do, and I gained a mile per gallon or so (no to mention much less wear and tear on the front end stuff).

Any chance of pics? I'm sure there could be much better input if there were pics of the beast in question.

KLF is 100% right on the V6 vs 22R-E issue. The V6 just seems to burn more fuel, and cost more to fix than the 22R-E. I'm constantly underwhelmed by the 3.slow in my sister's pickup. It doesn't seem to handle hills any better than my 22R-E did even! WFTO??!!?

Yeah, definitely install the AISIN lockouts, very worthwhile.

The biggest problem I have with the 3VZ is I *hate* to work on that thing. Not enough room.
 
I'm down in the Vancouver, WA / Portland, OR area, and $4k isn't completely out of line if it's clean and well maintained around here. And original... My '89 4x4 22RE regular cab is about to turn over 200k mi, and just got a thorough tune up. I consistently get 20-22 mpg w/ 5spd and Aisin hubs, all original. As you consider it, definitely check the motor cleanliness, front / rear crank seals, etc. as they'll wear and leak in that mileage range.
