Hello Hello. My family owns a Fj62. I say family cause my dad bought in 93 with 50,000 miles on it. When he retires and leaves the country it will be up to me to care for it. I just conviced him not to sell it(he really didnt anyway) and will begin to do some maintnence. The rig has 157000 miles on it. We never use it offroad. It is a city truck. Down he in south florida all we have is mud anyway. The tranny has began to slip when cold. Reverse slips and when in drive it will slip when it shifts into 3rd gear. Once the tranny heats up it work fine. I have not changed the fluid in a reeeaallly long time. I will be doing a change this weekend. Do you think it is safe to change the fluid with such high miles? I have heard that it is best not to with mileage that high. What do you guys think. Also my AC does not blow strong like it used too. Cold just not blowing hard. Do blowers start a slow death before they finally die? I also have noticed a loose feeling in the steering when driveing around town. Tie rod ends? Bad steering box? Where to look first? Also what can I do to upgrade the lighting, The lights are not as powerful as many nonHid lights I have seen. Also exhaust and intake. I need to replace the factory exhaust from the cat back or the cat as well. What muffler do you guys run? Is it ok to just go to a muffler shop and have them install a system with a universal muffler? I saw a TLC4X4 intake kit for sale. It brings the metal pipes and replaces the air box with a cone type air filter. Is this better performance wise than a safari snorkel? And finally how do I check to see if the injector blower works on the car. There is a blower mounted on the driver side fender well I am guessing to cool the injector from heat. I have never seen the blower running. How do I check it?
Sorry for the long post. I have noticed while reading the forums that this forum gets quick response's. Thanks!!!!

welcome aboard. that is a lot to cover, so you might try doing a search on some of those topics first. there could be some previous threads that will address some of your questions. i haven't heard anything about not changing out ATF when it gets a certain # of miles, but some of these other guys on the site might be able to address that better than i can.

good luck with it!

Okay I did a search on my ?'s and all I did was pull up my own post! I f you guys could help that would be great. Also I tried the FAQ on 60,62 and evey time I click a link it just takes me to the same page!

Thanks. Oh about my questions...................

did you try advanced search? that gives you more options.

also, faq should take you to a different screen, so i am not sure what is up with that.

if no luck on your searches, and you are planning on doing the work yourself, then figure out what is a priority and post your questions/issues for each project as you progress.

just my 2 cents on how to get replies to everything you need.

Changing tranny fluid.... Some people rec' against the power flush that some some shops use. The theory is that is frees up lots of loose particles that are happily stuck somewhere in the tranny. FOr a tranny that's had regular fluid changes, I wouldn't be too concerned about doin it. Your tranny sounds like it hasn't been done in a looong time. The more gentle approach is to pull the drain plug and let it drain out. Only about half of the total fluid will come out as a bunch of it is in the torque converter and hydraulic valve body. Replace the plug, fill it to full and drive it for a week then repeat the drain and refill. It doesn't positively get all the old stuff out, but after several drain/fills most the fluid is the new stuff. This may or may not help the slipping situation but its worth trying.

AC blower - try dropping the blower motor out the bottom of the dash behind the glove box - you might have a bunch of leaves clogging up the duct. Put a couple drops of oil on the motor bearings while you've got it out.

sweet. I will try all of these this weekend. I will post back the results.

Hollywood, Pembroke pines!!!!!

Hollywood, Pembroke pines area!(cool a knowledgeable crusier dude!)

On the head light thing, there are replacements out there, but first, you may just want to pull out your existing and clean all of your contacts. If you want to replace/upgrade to a more modern lighting system, call Man-A-Fre or SOR - I'm sure they have optoins for the 62.

on the fan blower, check this link:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=18447
Landpimp mentions somethign about his 3FE (motor in the 62) in his hardly ever coming on.

One thing you'll hear a lot of though is that you need to call Toyota and get the FSMs (factory service manuals) for your truck. Look at spending about $150 for all of them. It's the very best investment you can make.

Welcome! This site is great, but another great Fj62 resource is the 3FE list. Go here to sign up: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/3FE/

TLC intake kit: outrageously expensive, doesn't gain you much. The stock intake system works well. You will get a mild amount of help from a snorkel.

Exhaust: Consensus on teh 3FE list is to go with a custom exhaust, utilizing the existing exhaust manifold, replacing the oxygen sensors in approximatley the same positions along the pipe as in the factory exhaust, y-pipe to a single large universal cat, 2.5" pipe through a muffle of your choice.

The engine compartment cooling fan should run occasionally after you shut down the engine on a hot day.

A drain and refill of your tranmission is pretty safe - the warnings are about power flushes, which can dislodge stuff from the nooks and crannies of your tranny, which then move and clog something important. Another good plan is to drop the transmission pan and clean or change the filter in there.

Steering - yes, check the tie rod ends and all linkage carefully. The one that tends to fail is the connection between the Pitman arm on the steering box and the drag link - the little ball in the joint wears away after the grease is all gone.

Welcome!! Glad to have someone newer than me. You need to hook up with the big Land Cruiser club in Fla. As far as exhaust goes....I've got a 50 series Flowmaster delta flow with no cats. We can do that over here in 'Sippi. It sounds great with not to much noise. Intake on the other hand is stock with a Toyota filter. Wix are good too. Snorkels are great and look cool but dont expect a ton of power gains. Your 3FE is a tractor motor. Lotsa torque,,, little RPM. Spend the money on a tune-up. I need one :o . When was the last time your valves were adjusted? I just did mine and it made a huge difference. Glad to have you.

Thanks guy s for all the help. Valve adjust was done about 30k mile ago. I think I will stay with the factory air filter. Jeeze the blower in the engine compartment I think I have seen it on maybe once! I have the service manual. The big green one. I will check out the 3fe list guys. Also any Land Crusier clubs in S.Fla?
Tanks again

I can't give anymore good advice that has already been answered. Anbody have any suggestions on where to get a good price and quality for a transmission gasket? How about a long lasting, good sounding muffler? How about a good horn replacement? Thanks.

I'm in Naples, lowtide's in Lauderdale and Ale's in Miami. Not really a club, but we get together on occassion over here for some trails. I used to own a 62, sold it to a guy in Miami. Feel free to ask for help.

I just did a tranny flush and it solved all my slipping problems.

Excellent. I hope it solves my problem.

On the FSMs, there are other manuals that cover other aspects of the vehicle, I think (there are 3 for the 60) One that's very important is the emissions manual. For the 60, it cost $18. If I'd bought it sooner than I did, it could have saved me aout $700 because I kept throwing parts at my truck that weren't the problem.
