I have 84 Toyota Landcruiser That I am trying to restore. The guage has been showing that it is getting hot, but when I take it to any shops (including the dealership) they cannot get it to overheat.

We have put a new thermostat on it, a new radiator cap, & hard wired the side engine fan. It does ok going down the freeway but afterwards, coming to a stop, the guage shows the heat jumping up very fast (within a few seconds). We are considering putting new guages in it, and possibly a new radiator and fan clutch.

There are also several vacume hoses unhooked, and there seems to be conflicting opinions as to whether they can cause the engine to over-heat.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or experiences to share? Also does anyone have a copy of the vacume hose schematics/diagram? Finally does anyone know a good mechanic who has experience working on the early 80's Land Cruisers in Southern/Central California?

having read a lot of threads on overheating let me regurgitate some...

if youre getting hot going down the freeway (with airflow from speed) then it's likely a blockage somewhere...

if youre getting hot at slow speeds, or right after going freeway speeds - check your fan clutch. it's supposed to do the cooling at slower speeds (pulling air to cool)

I have the same year truck and the same problem. I have determined a blockage in the radiator. Take the radiator off and take to a shop and have tested. If there is a blockage then there lies your problem.

Could be fan clutch but suspect radiator...they don't last forever, especially when the PO used tap water in it. Also, if you drain and replace coolant, as when changing the thermostat, radiator, hoses, etc., it will often show a "fake" high temp[though not "in the red zone]" gauge reading due to air in the system. Air usually works it's way out after a while but some here have developed a technique for "burping" the air out. Good luck

Rod out the radiotor and replace the fan clutch. I bet you'll be fine then. That's what I did recently when I had overheating issues at idle. Now I can't get it to get hot even in 95 degree weather.
