1983 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ40
"Showroom Condition"
I purchased this vehicle one year ago. It arrived to me as a frame, body, and all other parts in plastic tubs. Most components had been taken completely apart, sand blasted and placed in plastic tubs. Luckily the engine and transmission remained mostly intact. While tracking down the history I met and became friends with the second owner. He is a Land Cruiser enthusiast and is well known in the Land Cruiser community. In fact he and Marv Specter of Specter off Road were close friends and worked together adding a limited slip differential to this vehicle. He also wrote a tech article in Toyota Trails explaining how to install an H55F five speed transmission (which this Land Cruiser has). In talking with him about this vehicle he was astounded why it had been taken apart. He had taken excellent care of the Land Cruiser and since only driven a short time since being sold he had no idea why it had been disassembled. I came to find out the previous owner just wanted a project. It has been a long year of work sorting and assembling this project but I could not be prouder of the outcome.
**BODY CONDITION**
Every steel body piece has been sand blasted to bare metal. Body was primed and painted by a renowned Model A and Classic Car expert. There was not pitting, dents, or rust repair needed to any part of this body. No filler was needed or added during the process. The Land Cruiser was repainted piece-by-piece using factory Beige (color code #464) in base coat, clear coat. **ALL STEEL** No fiberglass, aluminum, rhino liner, or diamond plate on this BEAUTY. Stainless steel hardware was used for all fastening points. New Toyota OEM parts include: front and rear door weather-stripping, inner, outer and channel, window door felt, front and rear turn signal assemblies, rear side marker lights, mirrors, windshield, windshield weather-stripping, door hinge pins, gear shift boots and knob, 4wd emblem, rear Toyota emblem, apron emblems, radiator emblem, pedal pads, kick vent gaskets, license plate frame, corner reflectors, poly body bushings, zinc shackles, u-bolts, front bumper, rear bumperetts, door pin bushing kit, windshield, hood hooks, windshield hooks
**INTERIOR CONDITION**
My intent was to restore everything original. Only two components are not, the previously mentioned 5-speed transmission and front seats. The front seats are from a Toyota four runner which I did not plan on keeping. However after talking to the previous owner, I found he added them for superior comfort. After sitting in them one time I too found that to be true and kept them. The headliner was ordered new from Specter off Road and professionally installed. Rear jump seat frames and roll bar have been powder coated to correct factory color. New top and lower dash pads (not a cover) installed. Original Toyota mat in front with Lloyd floor mat protectors. Rear has a custom Lloyd cargo mat. Both floors have sound deadening / heat protective materials under the mats. All dash controls, gauges, and lights in perfect working order. Jump seats and all seat belts in place. Original Toyota spare tire jack, rods, and tool kit in original mountings. New parts include: jump seat straps, door panels, seat belts, rear door handle assembly, pull straps, steering wheel skin
**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
46,000 miles on stock Toyota six cylinder (2F 4.2 Liter). **5-SPEED H55F SYNCHRONIZED TRANSMISSION**, 4-wheel drive. Rare factory POWER STEERING and AIR CONDITIONING. Valve cover, air cleaner, skid plate, and all miscellaneous parts, powder coated. New (5) BF Goodrich All Terrain 31x10.50x15 tires mounted on powder coated white OEM wheels. New parts include: engine gasket kit, recent top end rebuild, u-joints, tie rod ends, rebuilt brake booster, new master cylinder, rebuilt power steering gear, new OEM power steering pump, power steering lines, alternator, air conditioning compressor, radiator, thermostat, hoses & clamps, belts, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, wires, pcv valve, transmission transfer case and differential fluids, clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, complete front and rear brake overhaul, front knuckle rebuild, brake lines, spring bump stops, professional wheel alignment, new exhaust system
Upon completion of this project I took the vehicle to the well-known South East Land Cruiser expert shop: Atlanta Custom Creations. They charged the air conditioning for me and sorted out a power steering problem. I also had them drive and look for anything that could possibly need completed. They returned it to me with everything confirmed in good order.

************* History: 1983 was the final year for the FJ40 in the United States. The non-USA version was continued until 1984 but was considerably less evolved than the USA models. Low sales numbers due to the introduction of the FJ60 in 1981 coupled with increasing EPA and Safety standards, high import tariffs and competition from Jeep CJ's all contributed to Toyota's decision to discontinue the FJ40 in US Markets in 1983. There were approximately three hundred FJ40's delivered to the US that year, so finding a 1983 FJ40 in any condition is rare. Many have since been parted out, modified, or have simple rusted away. It is estimated that about fifty 1983 FJ40's were delivered with factory power steering and/or factory air conditioning. The trucks that remain in good condition with both options are Uber-rare! Besides the fact that there are very few of these FJ40's available, the 1983 model has many factors that make it the best all-around Land Cruiser Toyota ever built, and the most coveted. These enhancements were evolutionary and started in 1976 with USA trucks getting front disc brakes with four-piston calipers. By 1979 Toyota went to 3:73 gears, which gave the FJ40 better highway speed than earlier 4:11 gear ratio models. Then in August of 1980 we saw the change to the split transfer case and updated four-speed transmission, which was considerably smoother and quieter than its predecessor. The emergency brake design was updated using cables to actuate the rear drum brakes vs. the earlier models, which deployed a drum that sat behind the transfer case and was problematic and less efficient. The fuel tank was relocated from under the passenger seat to a safer location underneath the vehicle that allowed for an increased from 16 to 21.6 gallons. The steering wheel was re-designed to a more modern look. The dashboard, which is unique to 1983, was re-designed using a silver and black dash panel held with four screws to allow easy access to wiring for serviceability. The odometer was upgraded from five digits to six-digits. The choke received a lighted knob, as did the headlight switch. The seats became reclining, the jump seats were given metal U-shaped legs for added support. The cabin courtesy light came on when the doors are opened. The center console, which was a simple metal and then plastic box, was upgraded with an ashtray and integrated rear heater. Trucks delivered to colder climates were equipped with side window defrosters and in very late 1983 models you may find doors with wing windows, which were common on earlier FJ40's but discontinued in the mid 70's in favor of one larger window. Some 83's have odd, NON USA, content due to the fact that Toyota was running out of parts specific to the US model. So digital clocks, unique columns (with ignition lock) and other details are occasionally present. In summary, the 1983 FJ40, which has become known as "The Holy Grail" is not only in extremely short supply but also delivers more refinements than any Land Cruiser that Toyota built in the preceding years. The values throughout the last two decades have shown that the 1983 FJ40 is one of the best possible investments on four wheels. Every year they rise in value, on a trajectory unique in the classic car and 4x4 markets.
