I have owned 2 80 series and just looked at a 100 yesterday, I have not driven it but is really clean. For those that have owned/driven both it there a huge power difference for towing hill driving? It's a 2002 with 87k on it does not look like it has ever been off road at all. I think it's hard to beat the 80 for off road abilities does the 100 come close. I think if I drive it I may really want it. Please chime in

The 100 has way more power, period. I would say its only downfall is the IFS if you are going to be doing serious off roading, rock climbing, etc. Otherwise, it is very capable as well. I have a stock 100, but have wheeled with several 100's that where mildly modified that kept up fairly well with my old 80 that was on 37's.

For towing you will also notice quite a difference between the two, but you may want to consider a 5 speed auto in the 03+ 100's. The 98-02 will have the 4 speed tranny.

the engines are like night and day. But realistically the 80 is just fine for me, though, I just take my time and don't tow huge loads in the mountains. So I guess the 100 engine is gravy for me. But what gravy it is! I swear there has been more than one occasion when I was playing with the shifter and then forgot that I was in a lower gear when back on the freeway. Can't hear or feel a thing with revs up... That smooth...
And yes, I think the 100 will do 90% of what an 80 can do offroad. So the question would be realistically whether you need the extra 10% or not.

Bottom line: the 100 does virtually EVERYTHING better than an 80. Now, keep in mind, I have an 80 and love it. Don't plan on ever getting rid of it, because there are things it does quite well (very stable, easy to set up for off-road, I personally like the way it looks better than a 100, etc.). That being said, I'll echo some of the other comments already: The 100 is MUCH stronger (to me, even more so than an 80 with a SC - that's just my opinion), much smoother, quieter, stops better, rides better, has a better A/C (and rear A/C in most), better fuel mileage, etc.

Again, because of the ruggedness of the 80 and the way it looks, I'd really like to tell you it's a better truck than a 100, but it isn't. Like was said before, prolly the only thing that can be criticized about the 100 is the IFS, which many think isn't as good off-road, but is WORLDS better on-road!

If you're this close - and if you drive it - you'll likely buy it.

Pretty much all of this. We just got our '06 LX so I can finally have input here, although basic. I will never get rid of my 80 either but honestly the name and badging is all they have in common. The 80 is so unique and a driving experience all it's own, and a wonderful one I may add. Good way to slow down life and enjoy the journey. But they are totally different machines. We jumped right into this one with never driving a pre 03, but I can imagine the 5 spd it a little better. I can't even compare the power difference, the engine is smooth and quiet, and it feels much more solid and heavy, the heavy in a good way.

Power difference? Between an 80 and a 100? They aren't even close. I love my 100 for power, handling, comfort level. It is smooth, quiet and refined with plenty of power in reserve.

I love my 80 for style, ruggedness, simplicity, but not for power.

My suggestion is to own one of each. When I go to Arkansas to camp(3- 4 hours one way), I take the 80. When we drove to Yellowstone and back (3500 miles in 10 days), pulling my M416 w/ rtt, we definitely drove the 100.

The 80 is better than the 100 off road, but both are world class off road vehicles. You won't be able to tell the difference in capabilities unless you are running some highly technical trails.

I drove it today I was impressed, nice quiet and plenty of power. Really a different machine I could get used to one of these fairly easy. The wife thinks we should just get a tundra for the price but no way a tundra will out perform a cruiser offroad. More to think about might be headed that direction. Thanks for the input

Hard to let go of a fully locked 80 but I really just use because I can. Not too many times I have really needed it

Yes and yes. Once you drive that 100 around for a week or so there's no going back. The 100 is very capable and will do everything you want based off your last post.

If I had a dedicated rec vehicle, I would definitely get an 80 (prob keep my 100 too). The 100 accomplishes a wide variety of tasks for me (loooong highway trips comfortably, goes anywhere on ranch, tows ok, take it out on date night, etc). Plus it's super reliable in stock form (save for a couple of small items).

I had an 80 that was supercharged. It ran hot up the mtn passes, especially towing and it worked hard, you could feel it.

The 100 has more power than my supercharged 80 and it doesn't get hot in the engine bay, plus it doesn't feel like it is working as hard on the same grade

Towing with the 100 up the mtns is easier with the 100

Also, the only place I haven't wheeled my 100 that I did the 80 was the Rubicon trail.
