My wifes 80 is up around the 220kmile mark and the whine of the tcase is buggin the crap out of me when ever I dirve the thing. Worst part is she and my son are in it all the time and Im kinda worried about thier hearing going bad.

Is it possible to put a trans and case from an '89 62 series? I have the locking hubs up front already and the CDL is on all the time since the VC is giving the truck the worst klunk I have ever felt.

A440 in both just not sure of the T-case.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Paul

According to the TIS website, the earliest year I can get info. for Cruisers is 1990.

For a 1990 62 series, the tranny is--as you said--an A440F and the xfer is a full time HF2A. Now, I am not sure if the 1989 specs are different. It might be useful to post in the 60's section too to get some input there.

The part time xfer was not offered in the US in 1990 (HF1A). They only mated the part time with 1HZ, 3F, and 1HD-T engines (not offered in the US, but available in Canada).

My gut feeling is that if you find a 1990 or later Cruiser, your swap will be a plug and play; unbolt and rebolt onto your rig.

Good luck.

EDIT: Oh, just realized that you are in Canada. You might be able to source the part time unit and plug it in with little hassle, though again, you might want to post in the "international cruiser" section or contact one of the Canadian vendors who specialize in these rigs.

I dont think they are the same but I got a 80 series case I will sell ya cheap just becuase I have no need or want for the thing.

Would you mind stating the model year of your cruiser in the interest of easing diagnosis?

I assume that you have a 91 or 92 FJ-80 because you state you have the A440F transmission. If this is the case you have the HF2A transfer case and not the HF2AV t-case with the viscous coupling.

In either case, locking the CDL while driving over paved roads will eliminate the ability of the t-case to perform its design function: namely, the job of allowing the front wheels to rotate at a slightly different speed than the rear wheels, such as during a turn around a corner, or just due to infinitesimal differences in tire size from front to rear.

The loud whine may stem from driving with the center diff lock locked on paved roads.

Our 92 had a pretty solid "clank" in the drivetrain when shifting into gear from park or between forward and reverse gears. This was partially alleviated after repacking the birfields and replacing the right side birfield and drive flange, the splines of which had worn severely and allowed considerable slop.

He has locking hubs on the front axle. He has to run the CDL locked, or the hubs locked.

Let us know how this goes, it might be another option for t-case gears in an 80.

:whoops: Paul, do you run it unlocked all the time and just let the front axles spin without being engaged by the hubs? If so, I guess you can completely disregard a large chunk of my previous post...you might do a search on "McNamara"; they may have a t-case shaft for the 80 that has longer splines on it to reduce the "clank" that develops over time in the t-case.

Yes, I run the front axle unlocked all the time with the CDL on. The truck we own is a 91 with the 3FE same as the '88-early 90's. I would like the truck set up the same way my HJ60, BJ60 and all the other old cruisers I have owned. Part time 4WD. Has anyone ever done this or is thinking of it? I have a complete drivetrain from a 62 im my compound and was planing on swaping everything out maybe this week.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Is it normal to have the Tcase whining in the 80 any time the gas pedal is applied? Mine has ever since I can remember.

Our 92 has always had a light whine when the tcase is under load. It has not changed in volume or pitch.

Thanks for the reply.

My 92 has a whine under load also. From 40-60 MPH. It softens down around 60-70. I'm thinking of switching to Mobile 1 75W-90. Anyone have any other suggestions to quite things down ? I'm also preparing to order the "kit" to reseal and regrease the birfs.

Not a huge issue, but not the quitest ride.
