This was posted by John Yang on the 80s cool list- just thought the non-80s-cool-readers might like to see it. I don't much care for the 100-series front-end styling (or IFS front end for that matter) but it is interesting...

Subject: 80 series production in China

It looks like China might be producing the 80-series

http://www.zxauto.com.cn/EN/product_detail.asp?id=152

I've been to China numerous times, and all the 80 (and
100) series I've seen were NOT locally assembled. The
Chinese assembled vehicles does not bear the ASAHI(?)
marks on the glass, while the Chinese assembled
vehicles always uses local glass windows that bears
local (Chinese) imprints.

I know that China is producing(assemblying) the
90/Prado/4Runner and the Nissan Patrol, but the news
of the 80 is a first. I wonder if the 80 parts are
available for export?

From close inspection of the website, there are
numerous discrepancies in the listings:
* 2.35 liter engine (this sounds like the Prado)
* Double arm independent front suspension (on an 80?)
* 100 series front end and rear taillights

Maybe they don't have a 80 afterall. Who knows, I
might check out their factory on my next trip to
confirm.

A few years back there was a 20/20 show or one of it's kind covering the Chinese market. From that report they were building all kinds of knockoffs. Seems that there isn't any copywright laws so everything is free game. They start by buying replacement body parts, suspension items and such. Then poorly manufacture what they need. Their eye on the final product isn't that good and success would seem to be guaged by how much they don't have to manufacture! In that show they would actually put the original companies logos on it as well, in this case Toyota. Look qat the enlarged photo of the dash of the gold lion. Just a plain old rocker switch with no description on the dash. Something I might have done in my younger days.

Toyota is already in a partnership with FAW Group Corp. to jointly produce four Toyota models - including the "Crown" luxury sedan and the "Land Cruiser" sports utility vehicle.
