Oh yeah! Cool thread. I was in on that one beginning with post #156........
5.3 is the motor I was telling you guys about last night that are so cheap and easy to swap. Very, good motor. It won't win any races but it is a great motor. 300HP in stock form...
I had a 6.0 LQ4 in my last Twisted Customs buggy. I got it for $1200 with 24,000 miles on it.
I have the computer flashed and the harness done with headers and free flow air box this motor was 390HP and ran perfect.
It is a little "tall" top to bottom than an LS-1/2/3 and an LSX (5.3) as the intake is very tall and the oil pan is deep. I am sure it is not as tall as the stock straight 6 but I have not measured.
The oil pan is an easy, easy swap for an LS pan which gets you some room and if you must, you can put an LS intake on it. My thought is if you have to go to the problem of swapping the intake you are getting into LS2 costs at acquisition. The LQ4 is Iron Block and aluminum heads.
Step up to an LS-2 and you get 6.0 liters with aluminum block and heads. Those generally cost $1000-1500 more than Iron block motors. The price to weight advantage would not be worth the $$ in my opinion on an 80 series swap.
