Over the last few months I posted a few questions on this forum and today I got my 94 LC running. It started with a blown head gasket at 218k and I ended up rebuilding the motor.

  • Wait...what? Did you rebuild the motor or buy a new one? That thing looks GREAT!

It was all me. It's been open up and my head was cracked and way out. So it took me almost 2 months to source a good useable core. It came from Florida via greyhound I had it in 3 days and had everything gone through at the machine shop.

I love what you did. myself i just changed the engine from FZJ80 to FZJ100 . gave me better power and torque. i am still trying to get the Truck running smoothly. i am facing issues after speeds of 120KMH. i do not think its the Engine. i have a feeling its the 4X4 Trans.

down here in the middle east, its not easy to find a shop that can restore my truck the way i want it. i have issue with wiring from bumper to bumper, insulation and some vibration.

any advice?

Tell us about your choice of head fasteners and gasket please.

I picked up a complete gasket kit, it was a DNJ kit. However, I wasn't happy with the quality and after talking to the machine shop they recommended either a felpro head gasket or Toyota factory head gasket. The felpro is impossible to sorce so I did use a combination of a few of the DNJ gaskets and dealer stuff. If I had to do it again I would not purchase the DNJ kit and buy a much higher kit.
As far as the head fasteners I don't recall the brand. However, I did pick up some aftermarket head bolt.
I did use DNJ pistons the machine shop said they never have problems with their Pistons and rings. I did some research on the rings and they are Hastings just rebranded.

A year ago I ordered a DNJ gasket kit when I did my HG. The salesman said it was made in Japan so I ordered it. The box clearly states "made in Taiwan". The HG that blew was a FelPro with 16k miles installed by a good shop with a full rebuild. I can tell you that you made a good decision to use a Toyota HG because the FelPro I removed looked identical to the DNJ. The Toyota HG is much more robust, however, the remainder of the DNJ gaskets and seals look just like OEM. Nice work on your rebuild!

All the pictures i could find of any aftermarket head gaskets, and i looked at a lot, none of them had the updated round holes that oem did at the rear water passages where they blow.
