Has anyone fitted 80 series landcruiser diffs under a 79 or 78 series chassis? Mainly after info on the front, Do the 78/79 series front coils fit the 80 series front coil hats? Do the radius arm mounts etc need to be moved? if so by how much? Anything else i should know before attempting it?

Thanks in advance

I would guess at the vey least that frame width will be different so anything attached to the frame will be different width and need to be adjusted accordingly. My understanding is that the total width of the 80 axles is a bit wider than a 70 series.
Yes this is the reason i want to put 80 series diffs under it also alot easier to come by and cheaper then 78/79 diffs

80/105 front diff bolts into into the post 07 v8 78/79 series (pre late 2016). Radius arm and panhard are a direct fit. Sway bar is 15mm off (7.5mm a side) which can be tweeked or the mounts moved. Need to use 78/79 coils or weld in 80/105 top hats. 80/105 coils are a larger diameter, though not by a great deal.

Pre v8 78/79 needs all mounts cut off/rewelded.

So 78/79 series coils will fit the 80 series

So 78/79 coils will work with the 80 series diff coil hats?

Thanks for that! I have been researching it for awhile since I am converting the front suspension on a 70-series and I had suspected the 76/78/79 coils were smaller. I kind of confirmed that visually recently but had not put a tape measured to it.

Cheers

Question, seems like either way requires cutting and welding, re-engineering the geometry. At that point why not just do a custom coilover link setup? Ive been contemplating converting my solid axle 70 to a coil, by scabbing parts of an 80, but considering all the work involved, doing a custom link setup is not much more work and should work much better if done correctly.

I dont mind moving the mounts on the diff housing would be pretty simple imo but if the 78/79 coils dont fit the 80 diff then ill just find a 79 diff and use that instead

Yes.

What model 79 do you have?
Sweet cheers, dont own a 79 doing a hzj78 chassis swap to my fzj75 troopy got the chassis and an 80 series front diff lined up also got an 80 series rear diff laying around from when i put the 80 hubs on my 75

Yes.

Thanks for the info!

I am currently rounding up the parts to convert my 1990 70-series and your info is very helpful.

I have decided to use mostly 76/78/79 components in my conversion. Most of which I have ordered new from Toyota. I am using axle side brackets I will cut off an 80-series housing.

Cheers

I don't disagree, especially for off-road. However, fitting 80-series or better 76/78/79 series parts will be much easier. It will perform alright, on-road and soso off-road. What it does is keep it Toyota rather than custom. For a lot of Cruiserheads, keeping it Toyota is important.

My client who bought my truck just wants less front end bounce and stiffness and a better ride on pavement.

Thanks, Yes keeping it all Toyota is very appealing, start a thread for yours when you get it all sorted out. 80 series parts are dime a dozen, I was thinking of going to a junk yard and cutting all the front end parts, but to find a 76/78/79 state side that will part with all those, I can't see being easy or cheap.

And if you're going to do all that, why not use an altogether stronger front axle? Nissan GQ fronts are superior to anything ever put on a Landcruiser & are the same width as an 80 series. Not quite so relevant in the US but worthy of consideration in Oz & NZ where Patrol/Safaris are common.

Well I have purchased all the 70-series coil bits from Toyota. All the brackets, coil springs, pan hard and so forth. I am just waiting on a text to confirm if 80 to 70 series radius arms are the same. If they are I will use 80 radius arms, if not I will buy new 70-series ones from Toyota.

It is about on par cost wise with a custom 3-link, perhaps a little cheaper considering what a nice set of coil overs cost.

I already have a thread going, “1990 PZJ70 refurbish”.
