Does anyone have experience replacing the valve cover gasket and adjusting the valves on a 1FZ engine? I have done a valve adjustment on the 3VZ (4Runner) engine, so I'm familiar with the feeler gage check, shim swap (grind), etc. I'm curious if anyone has any tips, hints, tools (spring compressor pliers) from experience on the 80. I've checked the 80 series tech area and don't see much as far as tips, pics, etc. FYI, I'm starting to review that area of the FSM today...

I just did the valve cover gasket on mine, but stupidly didnt check the valve shim clearances. as far as replacement of gasket, parts i used were:

vg and throttle body gaskets
new pcv and pcv grommet and pcv hoses
new msc vaccum hoses
6 new spark plug seals

i also put new plugs, wires and dist. cap on as well. removing the old spark plugs seals can be a biatch. I had to use a small screwdriver and a hammer to bend the old seals until they popped out. A seal puller just kept breaking them in little pieces they were so brittle.

Things to look out for off the top of my head:

Make sure before you take off the throttle body you mark the throttle, cruise, and trans cable, or like i did count the threads on both sides of the mount.

Go ahead and take the time to clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner.

buy lots of brake cleaner.

number 6 spark plug can be hard to get to. factory tool works well for this im told.

Be very careful with torque specs on vc bolts. i used around 108 inch pounds. I think the breaking point is around 13-14 ftlbs where the bolt will snap. There is no fsm spec for this, mine is still leak free.

Dont take the time to drain the coolant, it isnt neccessary and you will only lose a few spoon fulls.

Be careful taking the air intake hose off, they have been known to crack. i took out the entire air filter box and ductwork to give it a good clean. with the air cleaner out, that space make a good seat to do the job.

Thats all i can remember right now. let me know if you have any other questions.

clint i am about to do my valve cover gasket (small leak) I got all the parts, just haven't found the time yet. checking the valve clearance might not be a bad idea. i will have to read up on it

You guys post up / PM / call when you're doing yours, I want to help and check this out as I need to do mine too. Jon great info, thx for that.

Jon,
Thank you for the info. Do you by chance have any pics from the process? I will clean the TB for sure and probably double check the TPS adjustment. When I first bought the truck, I replaced the VSV under the intake, and in doing so removed the intake manifold and TB and cleaned both well. The TB is clean compared to what the inside of the intake manifold looks like. If I can find the pictures, I will post them. I don't remember the differences between brake cleaner and TB cleaner, but would recommend using TB cleaner instead just to be safe with sensors and such. As far as spark plugs, I don't plan to replace them again since I recently changed them to Denso iridiums. :)

Eric and Joe,
I still need to order the parts and find the time, but will give you both a shout when I plan to get started. May even be after the STR. Checking the valve shim clearances is relatively easy, but replacing the shims is a PITA. I will probably break down and buy the SSTs to do it properly this time. I believe Snap On makes a relatively inexpensive set that should work. After doing the valve adjustment on my old 4Runner without the proper SSTs, I swore I wouldn't go that route again. Other than having to remove the cams, the rest of the process seems identical to what I did before. I even have an xls spreadsheet setup for the the measurements and calculations.

I need to do the same on mine too..I've had the valve cover gasket for a more than a few months but haven't gotten around to replacing it.

sorry dont have any pics that would be any good. i did take pics of the threads on the cables and also counted them on both sides of the bracket and wrote them down. its pretty straight forward once you get into it. check autozone tool rental i think they have a valve spring compressor etc. but im not 100 percent sure.

i would def only use tb cleaner on the throttle body and intake and brake cleaner just to clean off the valve cover gasket and mating surface of the head. On mine, when i pulled the tb off there is a small port on the intake that was pretty closed up with carbon build up, i used a pick to clean it out. you may want to check this on yours too, esp if you have high start up idle, ive heard that it fixes it sometimes.

It seems like this would be a great time to do the PHH and other hoses in that area. I think I just got an Easter Weekend project, esp considering all of the other leaks I have. :(

I know I am not an ONSC member, but I am local, and looking to meet some of you guys. As well, I can be fairly handy with a wrench, or a bottle of beer.

Let me know if you need the assistance, I will be glad to lend a hand.
