I've been parting out a '92 FJ80 and have successfully swapped some of its parts onto my '76 FJ40 (with a '79 engine). Here's a link to the parting-out thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/parting-out/287091-92-fj80-so-cal-98%-all-part-intact.html
So far, I have used the brake booster and master cylinder (still needs some minor adjustments, but the braking performance has really improved). FYI, my 40 has front disks and drums in the back….same as the ’92 FJ80 (this year is non-ABS).
I also used the auxiliary transmission cooler as a power steering cooler (this was pretty easy and works well).
Here’s the thread for the project: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/289209-80-series-atf-cooler-used-40-series-ps-cooler.html
I put the gear reduction starter in place of the stock unit last night....
That was a simple,
job, though I did have to get a longer battery cable. Now I have to get used to the radically different sound when I fire it up....fires nicely, though.
and the horns, too, since the ones on my 40 have never worked.
I got the horns installed, but they still don't work....need to trouble shoot that one....
I also found that the inner boot for the transfer case shift lever on the 80 is a pretty close match to the shifter boot....kinda surprised at that one. It needs to be cleaned up and trimmed around the edges a bit, but it's better than what was on there before.
I will probably also save the power steering gearbox, pump and pump mount.
Here's a pic of a 40/60 pump (left) and the 80 pump (right):
Here's the different reservoirs - the 80 is on the left in this pic and the 40/60 is on the right. They have different mounting tabs and will NOT interchange:
The mounting bracket for the 80 pump looks like a mirror image of the driver side mounted 40 pump. I read a thread not too long ago where a guy had mounted the stock 80 pump to the passenger side of his 2F block and it bolted right on using the stock mounting bracket. Here's a link: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...tock-ps.html?highlight=FJ80+power+steering+40
Though I'm running an OEM 40 series pump and a mini-truck box, (here's the thread to that project: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...d-power-steering-oem-pump-mini-truck-box.html) I figure I'll save it for future rigs. By the way, it looks like the return line nipple from the 80 would work for the mini-truck box....
So, finally, here is my question to you guys: Are there any other 80 parts that you all know about that I could swap over to my 40? Since I have them, I might as well use them. I'm not gonna do anything extreme that would require too much fabrication and/or extensive welding....just looking to access your knowledge about what pieces can "cross-over" with relative ease. Thanks in advance!
