80 next to a 200

Simple is easy to fix. 80's were designed, in part, to be a machine used in third world countries where often times, the rugged reliability and simplicity of a system or component made all the difference.

Part maketing hype...I will agree that the 80 series is more capable and the 100 series went upscale but the 100 series and 200 series are still pretty tough.

Other than that. If you read an article with the chief engineer about the 200 series Land Cruiser he is quoted as saying that in Australia/Africa and a few other places the Land Cruiser is equipped with as little electronic equipment as possible because according to the engineer, it needed to be as reliable as possible and must be easliy repaired in the field.

Perhaps that is why the 200 series stil uses the 4.7 overseas and does not have TEMS, electronic hatch in most markets.

In all honesty. If I was going to cross the Sahara desert I probably would choose a 70 series or 80 series over a 100 or 200 but I still might want the 200 series because of the comfort inside.

Wonder why manufactures do that, make a new LC look like a big Highlander? Mercedes does the same thing with their new C class and the new S class, the C class looks like a S Class that was washed in hot water and srunk :) Does not make the buyer of the big expensive vehicle feel very special.

Did not say it was ugly, I also think the new C class and S class Mercedes are good looking. But my point is why doesn't the Manufacture use a distinct design for the high dollar vehicle, if your paying $70K for a ride it should not have the same look as a $20K vehicle by the same manufacture.

Ok, I see your point and agree.

I'll say this, If I had a choice it would be a Lexus 100 over Toyota 100, and Toyota 200 over Lexus 200...the LX570 is just SO DAMN UGLY.

You want your bread and butter volume SUV to at least resemble the flagship. Same thing with your trucks if you are Toyota. But Lexus should be different.

Lexus had it right with the GS, LX, SC all having the four light look for the front end while the ES, GX and LS were two lights on the grille...Now Lexus has them all looking the same...and I find it interesting that the sales of Lexus right now are in the tank.

When you used to buy a Lexus you were buying the model and less so the brand. Now they are making the interiors and exteriors all look too similar so that when you see a Lexus you the brand and not so much the model anymore.

All sales of huge SUV's are in the tank.

And "the typical LX470/570 US buyer" doesn't care about the similar looks. They want a Lexus and that's it. All the power to them.

Not 200 series LC and LX models. Earlier this summer the LX had the shortest on lot day supply of any vehicle.

True, but to be fair, we are also talking about ultra low volume (new body style) vehicles in comparison to dinosaur platforms of a year ago.

dinosaur platforms of a year ago.

Don't know about dinosaur but they were ancient...and obsolete for today's standards and needs.

I believe Toyota's slogan is "Moving Forward" and they sure did with 200 series
