Howdy

Pretty much talked myself into installing some kind of locker on my 3rd gen 4runner after this snow. I've driven many many thousands of miles on autolockers in all weather, but always with a manual transmission. Now I'm looking at selectable options and wanting something simple and less prone to fxxx up on my DD.
Toyota e locker is cool as well as the ARB air locker, but those present unique issues for use and headache for install.

Now I'm looking at a rear toyota elocker carrier with a chilcat cable activated mod.
Are there any other cable activated locker combos for the 8" that I should consider?

The Harrops are really nice from an installation standpoint. The electrical work isn't any more complicated than install fog lights. I'm not aware of any non-exotic cable locker options.

chains are going to help you a lot more in snow than autolocker will. On my "driveway", the hilux had issues with both ends locked until I put chains on the rear.

An e-locker in the rear would be a fairly simple swap and you can get a toggle switch controller. that is what i put in the front of the hilux. Granted, on the front axle, it required a little bit of fab work....

Looks like I'll need to source a rear e locked diff and likely a matching ratio front, Chilcat conversion, and likely some other random bits.
$1300 or so at current market.

Or

Just put a damn auto locker in the rear and have more fun around the icy corners.

Suppose I need to test drive an automatic transmission vehicle equipped with a rear auto locker before I jump into this kind of project.

I could use the $delta for skid plates and Gucci gear.

QUESTION
Will shifting in neutral with the auto tranny and coasting have similar if not identical handling properties of a standard transmission truck when depressing the clutch? I don't see how there would be a difference, but the board is fairly knowledgeable. I remember reading some years back that the auto transmission trucks with autolocked rears have less quirks. With my current trucks I tend to coast around sharp corners whenever possible so the locker disengages and I don't chirp the inside wheel.

Think I've just about talked myself back into an autolocker.

Yes it will that how I was taught and how I taught my daughter to stop in the snow/ice it's amasing how much it helps with an auto.
