I started to pull my 3 core rad today to put in my new 4 core....as I went to pull the shroud, I saw my oil cooler mounted inside the shroud (done by the guy who installed my turbo) and I'm now wondering if this might not be contributing to my temp problems? When I had my AC installed, the reciever/dryer had to be mounted in exactly the same place (ie in line with the oil cooler). So here's what I have, all mounted in line with each other:

Rec'v/Dryer
Condensor
Rad
Oil cooler

I'm wondering if I'm just restricting air flow too much by having the oil cooler where it is? I'm pretty hard up for room in there with all the other s*** under the hood of this thing. Any idea's as to where the hell else I can mount this oil cooler? How much air flow does the oil cooler need anyway?

the plan is to install a 4 core rad and remove the clutch fan in favor of a solid fan...I need to be able to keep this thing cool in high temp/high altitude situations such as crossing the Nevada desert in the summer with the AC cranked...

Hey Brett:

Since the 3B has an integral oil/coolant heat exchanger. I'm not sure there is any real benefit to using an oil cooler at all. This seems expecially true if they are competing for airflow. Anybody have some data about oil to air heat transfer vs. water to air?

Brett,
suggestion, get rid of the arm burner while you are working on the truck... i still have not healed...
my suggestion is to remove the oil cooler and run an automatic rad and plum the oil lines into the "tranny" couplings on the rad. this would eliminate the oil cooler all together but still give the engine some added cooling for the oil.
BUT since you have that pretty new rad i highly doubt you would be interested in that suggestion.
cheers

Brett,

From my racing days I can tell you that it was a big no-no to run the oil cooler after the radiator (closer to the engine) I am not sure of the technical reasons but I was always told that it will hinder the cooler of the water. I would get rid of the oil cooler.

When I was having heating problems on my 42 series I added the oil cooler as well as all the other stuff and it really did not help that much at all. I think the 3B do a good job of keeping the oil at appropriate levels. That includes when you add the AXT turbo (have that on my 42 series as well).

Cheers,

Michael

Might not be be applicable to your cooling issues, but this is what Arron wrote from South America.

He changed out the electric fan for a larger unit, made a bit of a difference, biggest improvement wash lowering the 8274 winch and allowing better air flow.

PS he is in Panama, was robbed in Costa Rica but overall he is having a great time.

Good luck Brett with your cooling issues.

I think we've hit the nail on the head. I'm going to s***-can the oil cooler (I really have no place else to mount it), this alone will probably fox my problems. So, I've spent $350 on an oil cooler I don't need, and now $500 on a Rad I probably didn't need either :flipoff2: ....hind sight is so 20/20 isn't it?

Well that sucks to hear. I really don't want to sell my upright for a low profile.

i have been running an 8274 on both the BJ74 ol smokey and the HZJ75 for quite some time and never had a problem...
interesting...
cheers

I think the reason why moving the winch down helped is cause of the electric fan not being as strong as a stock one. I think that the winch looks a lot better lower than it looked with a heep bumper. the new bumper is stock one off a cruiser from honduras

70 rad size/fan

Brett

I suspect that the oil cooler placed in the last pass is doing 0% for you oil temp.

A 4core rad is an improvement but with all your "stuff" in front of the rad your major obstacle is actually getting enough air flow through the rad.

A locked up stock 3B clutch fan(I did a test) helps but is noisy and takes a lot of power. I ended up using a 2H clutch /fan with slight trimming of fan blade edges.

I have regularly towed an 18" travel trailer and have crossed Canada with it, and no overheating issues.

Interesting, is the HJ60 fan the same as the FJ60? And to think I just ordered 3 bottles of silicon to rebuild the fan clutch

Brett, Did you recore your existing or...?

I agree...I just pulled the oil cooler out and am dropping in my 4 core rad tonight...I'm going to drive it for a while without the locked fan and see what the temps are like. I think that just pulling the oil cooler and going to a 4 core is going to be a massive improvement...if I don't end up needing the locked fan, all the better.

I bought a 4 row re-core from 4W Auto in Edmonton. I looked everywhere and couldn't fine a "new" 70 series 4 row that was a direct bolt in. I think doing a re-core on your stock rad is the only direct "bolt in" solution AFAIK.

I have to disagree with the comment about a noisy locked up clutch fan, I have been running them for the last 6 months on several 70 series and everyone I build (that is 5 in the last month) I test on a 70 series for a few days before I ship them. The results I have found is not much more noisy, and will drop the temp quicker when stoped at a light and keep the temp about 5degrees (F) cooler under load. the noise test was done on three different 70 series one being a ragtop, the temp test were done on the same cruiser with 5 different locked up clutch fans and had the same results. I will say that two of the three 70 series cruisers are running 82c thermstats and the other one is running stock one I think 88c thermostat. Overall I see noticable improvement in keeping the temp from spiking and about 5degree F average drop on 70 with 82c thermostat.

G'day,

Michael

4 Core factory part number

Hey everybody,

I remember someone telling me that Toyota makes a 4 core for the 70 series, does anyone out here have the part number for it??

Cheers,

Michael

I pulled out all the air conditioner stuff today.
That made a big difference
My problem is with the AC condensor in front of the radiator the mud and dirt is impossible to clean.

Installing a AT cooler now , ordered the hoses tonight

Trying to decide if I need a power steering cooler in there

i could be wrong but i think there is a PS cooler run there already, that single line running under the rad out and back...
no?

I'll check on that but I didnt see one when I was in there

Thanks

Locked up fans are a bit noisier. I did mine when I was having cooling trouble after having no luck rebuilding the clutch and I found it to be much more efffective at cooling than the clutch version ever was. The tradeoff was noise and likley power. I can live with both.

Micheal, what are you building exactly? Are you locking up an old clutch or building a solid mount for the fan?

Bruce...Michael is locking up an existing clutch fan, he just sent me one
