My wife and I have July 21 thru Aug 6th. Of course we have to tack on travel days to wherever we are going. Anybody have suggestions along any of the routes that are on this map? We figure to leave out on the 22nd. That gives us a good amount of time to stop at places on the way. We also have a good amount of time after HIH. I am going to do some more research myself, but I wanted to see if anybody had any opinions on the matter.

Here are my suggestions. Keep in mind I live in ABQ so I have some bias. Also, take the southern route you have highlighted. Although, the middle route through southern Colorado will be scenic once you get west of Trinidad.
Tucumcari/Santa Rosa Area: Go swimming in the Blue Hole - sinkhole that is filled with artesian spring that pumps something like 3,000 gallons per minute so the water is crystal clear and cool.
ABQ: Aerial Tram from the city (5,000 ft) to the top of our mountain (10,000 ft); Biopark (Zoo, Gardens, Aquarium); Old Town (300+ year old city center with shopping); Explora Science Museum; NM Museum of Natural History; Albuquerque Isotopes AAA affiliate for Colorado Rockies Baseball Team with a really neat park; Santa Fe is pretty neat for out-of-towners with lots of shopping, architecture, museums, art shops in a 400 year old city.
On the drive from ABQ to Silverton consider the following stops along the way: Chaco Canyon (very cool and off the beaten path Ancestral Puebloan ruins), Aztec Ruins ( 1 mile off your route); Mesa Verde National Park (Do not pass this up if you can swing it); Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge RR; Hanging out in the town of Durango for shopping, food, outdoors stuff.

One word of caution: Albuquerque is a craphole of a town for auto theft and vandalism. If you plan to stay here overnight, I can give suggestions for better parts of town to stay in. Campgrounds like KOA may be a better choice with a vehicle full of camping gear.

I believe Imogene is shut down for "summer repairs". Can anyone confirm? I'm going solo (I guess a "hundred in the hills") in August and would hate to miss Imogene. A friend who was up there this past week posted photos of the road closure signs.

We will validate. Thx

You can go on the USDA website to view trail conditions and status in that area. I am curious as well since I will running a lot of these trails 2wks after you guys leave. As of June 28, the USDA lists Imogene as well as a few others as closed. Some of them should be opening soon, not sure about the "summer repairs" on Imogene though.

EDIT: Didn't mean to include the second pic, that is from 2015

Is anyone unfortunately unable to attend? We are wait-listed and would love to attend, make some new friends, and enjoy Colorado.

I know someone that is dropping off but not sure if they have done it or not.

Sounds reasonable. I thought that I would ask. We are from Ohio but will be in Colorado at that time and want to test out our new to us 2000 lx470.

We have 67 folks on the wait list. We are working it down from top to bottom. So we can't really pull off any trades if you actually find someone. Hope that makes sense. thx

I'm going to say investing in a pair of slip on rubber rain boots is probably a good idea to keep your camp and the main building as clean as possible.
Great suggestion. I can't recall how many black rubber boots we've purchased from Wal-Mart over the years as the kids have grown up to keep their feet dry and 'clean' but be easily removed at the door to the tent.

I just returned to Kansas from a long weekend in Central Colorado. Man, I am ready to get back out there to that cool, dry climate for HIH!

We might not be able to attend. Waiting to see what the Dr says on Thursday about the newly prego wife and high altitude. I did a review of the scientific literature today and it was mixed.

If we don't get the clearance do we get a refund or does the person who takes our spot pay us for it?

Coming down to the wire now. We are doing half refunds on registration since we are so far into this and everything has been ordered, reserved, etc. Hope you guys can make it. Shoot me a note if you need to cancel. Thx
