hi guys i recently signed up to this forum and i am only new to it so still trying to work it all out. i own a 79 series landcruiser ute, 06 model RV factory turbo diesel. 1hd-fte motor. i tow a 5th wheel gooseneck which fully loaded with horses and gear comes close to 4 ton. it has been certified and all done legally to tow with mod plates and all.. before i started towing this thing i completely stripped the main gear in the transfer case ( was giving it some curry in 2nd gear mind you) it has a 160,000 mms on it and has now been fixed after a hefty $3,200 bill.. i am worried it will possibly happen again when i am in the middle of no where., does anybody out there have any idea why it did this and if it can be "beefed up" some how or if any one else has had this same problem? than :)

never seen the input gear stripped in a 2 piece case before, this will be interesting ...

you wouldn't have pics of the stripped gear?

Stripped gear

Yes that is a common problem. happens in the 75s as well.
When they have don a lot of towing the t/case input gear spline wears and also the sharft. The gear onley runes on about 30mm of spline, they make a aftermarkrt one, you take the spacers and PTO gear out and you get about 130mm of spline. Even it the sharft is worn this gear fixes it. On the 79s the couplier between the G/box and T/case do give problems they strip also. They make a heavey one also, it would be advised to change it. It comes as a coupler & sharft as one. I serviced one that towed a goose neck van . I also had to replace the rear diff drive flange because it started wearing the spline.

i dont know exactly which gear it was as the mechanic had just told me it was the main spline in the transfercase? he did show me in real life but unfortunately have no pictures. the gearbox had to be completely removed in order to get to it to fix it. but it tows absolautely great!! iam just a little worried about the running gear in it now.. the motor hauls ass!!

Jack Mcnamara and Terrain Tamer sell bits and pieces to beef them up.Not sure if TT parts are the same as Mcnamaras

are you talking the inner spline on the input gear? the inside of the gear was stripped or the teeth of the gear itself was stripped?
i do know the splines wear after a few hundred thousand km and can need a custom gear ., umm, how many km is on this rig?

Shoot, if you did the work yourself, for $3200 you could just about replace every single gear, shaft, and bearing inside case:meh:

get a macnamara in there. I put one in on my 77 and i hope I never have to replace my output shaft...

stripped spline

I'm very keen for pics, can you go back to the mechanic and get the old parts?
This transfer is not the old split case one like most 70,s as the 1hdfte runs the H box it will have HF2A or simmiler transfer like the 80 series which is very tough.
