Well I wanted to update everone on my progress with my 40. The wiring is 99% complete, exhaust is done and fuel is "done."
Towed it home yesterday from the shop with the hopes that it wouuld run (not drive) just run. So I put water in the cooling system (to check for leaks) 5 gal of fuel. Check the oil and connected the battery. Sprayed a little starter fluid in the carb and turned the key...... and she tried to start. Tried a few more times and no start. My mech said that he knows what the problem is, so hopefully maybe this week she will be running. The good news everything turned and moved. :D The bad news one leaky radiator hose and i think the water pump is leaking. :whoops:

I attached some photos....

thanks....

Thanks I really appreciate it. Trying to get her back the days when my dad and drove her all over the Sierra Nevadas, Death Valley and the high desert of California. I owe a lot to this club for helping me install my engine and a pre thank you for the help in Oct. :grinpimp:

air cleaner question.....

Thanks guys shes almost there. ;) As far as a airfilter... what should I do? Go back to stock? Or i've seen some interesting configurations on mud that don't look to bad. Does anybody know where I can order them from? Ideas?

Filter..... get a wix one from napa or an OEM one from Fred Anderson

the oem filter on my 80 is washable, which is good because i can rinse it out after all the dust on the trails. the factory canister does a good job at keeping things dry and free of foreign objects and are generally designed to pull in the cooler air outside of your engine compartment which helps make more HP.

the after market setups allow a little more air flow (not much) but more of the filter is exposed and generally doesn't have any ducting for the cooler outside air. they are also a little louder. (don't get me wrong i love the sound of the secondaries kicking in on an un restricted quadrajet). it come down to a personal choice in my opinion once you have addressed the requirments. i am sure i could help you come up with something once i see how much room we have to work with.

I have an air filter alex gave me... but i do not have the housing it goes in.

ahh so you are looking for the filter housing... check, Greg, RK, Marshall, or Kyle for that.

Driveshaft......

I've been working on cruiser and found out that I do have a driveshaft for the front but the rear I'm going to need a custom one. Since I have a Currie 9" Ford rearend I'm going to need some type of adapter or a custom shaft made. One end to the toyota t-case and the other to the ford yoke? (is that right term)

I know there was talk about shops in Raleigh area. Are there any down my way? Heres some pics of what I have to work with..

It's really alive....

Update..... Cruiser is running :D . I will try to post a video this week. Now I just need to win the axle rebuild kit this weekend and I will be set!

After bashing my exhaust at URE repeatedly (and getting stuck b/c of it last time) I have it at a shop today to have it re-run inside the frame rail above the skid plate. I suggest you have yours re-routed before you take it on trails and might also want to have the muffler relocated. It looks especially vunerable in the pic above. For the record, I know little to nothing compared to most of these guys so get their opinions.
