I looked thru the previous posts and have found several similar dimensions for the rear opening (the clearance opening of tub), similar distance from wheel well to wheel well. I have seen 40-7/8, 41, 41-1/8, and 41-1/4. Can I get some measurements off of some 78's to narrow this down?

I have a 72 wearing a 76 hard top so I can't help. But you should post a pic of the measurement you are looking for.

Measurement should be the same from the floor to the top of the tub. Ambulance doors are square so the tub should be the same. Wider at the top is because of sill rust or repaired and not squared when installed. Inside dimensions should same for ambulance and tailgate/barn doors.

Years ago I checked how a tailgate fit inside and ambulance door opening on a original 10/75 with 4,500 miles.

I understand. That's what I was assuming. I just can't determine the true dimension. As there are alot of variations on the actual opening

I might have something let me dig in the photo archive…
Ok I suck at linking an old thread but I went with 41”. Below…

@wimberosa I’ll take any measurements you’ve got. The more easily this info is reachable the more it helps the next 40 owner.

Below are additional dimensions I got including how I squared up and aligned my rear quarters before cutting the panel line.

Right side was aligned.

Left side was garbage and needed help.

Brought it back in by cutting and rebracing while clamping and squaring it up. I hope I’m doing this right but if not, it’s still 1000 times better than before. (I tell myself that often)

Measured a couple of FSTs today. One a 1962, the other a 1973. Both just under 41". Maybe a 1/16". Just used a measuring tape. Both measures the same at the bottom, mid way up and at the top. Sides are parallel to each other.
