I am original owner of 1978 FJ40. Replaced the leaking mechanical fuel pump with a Toyota mechanical fuel pump. It does not consistently pump fuel to the factory carb. I can be driving for a few days, week or month and then it dies and will not start up until it sets for at least 6 hours. Not sure why this happens. Thinking of changing to an electric fuel pump. I have a Carter High Performance electric fuel pump md P4594. It puts out 7 psi. Is 7 psi too strong for the factory carb? Will it work for my FJ40? Greg

A 7 psi pump might be on the higher side for a factory carb, which usually works well with lower pressures. It could lead to flooding or other issues. But there's hope – you could try a fuel pressure regulator to dial down the pressure and ensure a smoother flow to the carb.

Give that a shot before going all in on an electric pump. It might just be the tweak your FJ40 needs to keep running smoothly. Good luck, and keep that classic ride rolling!
