I've been looking through IH8MUD for about a year trying to find info regarding 78 FJ40 California Vacuum/Emissions diagrams. I have downloaded tons of diagrams, pics of the vacuum hose information decals, etc. I purchased an emissions manual, service manuals, etc. etc... spent hours upon hours trying to make the right connections and darn if I (or several mechanics) can't figure out how to route the hoses coming off the carburetor. I acquired this FJ40 a couple of years ago and the previous owner must have tried a desmog setup because there were hoses capped off and nothing seemed to match any of the diagrams. Especially of concern is the two ports next to the mixture screw. I am totally lost and can't find anyone willing to help (even the local Land Cruiser club).

Any help you could supply would be appreciated...

I still have my stock 78 CA truck. I don't have time at the moment, but I can take a couple of photos later today.

If you look at diagrams 4.3 and 4.4 of the 78 emissions manual, you can see that the port called the EGR port is plumbed to the two BVSVs (in the thermostat housing) in parallel. The other port, called the TP port, is plumbed to VSV port 14.

I just added the diagram to the above post.

@spotcruiser previously posted those diagrams in THIS THREAD... There's a bit of discussion in that thread.

For the ports next to the mixture screw, pay attention to the inset in his diagram... Shown below... I forget what that 'rail' is called, but the ports feed to the bottom of that 'rail', as shown in the inset...vacuum hoses come off the top of that 'rail'... You should be able to follow them on his diagram, from there.

EDIT: the 'rail' is located in the front (of vehicle) side of the carb

Thank you. I have this diagram (among many others) - I just couldn't figure some of it out. I'm not a carb guy, but now that I have this FJ, I am trying to be more knowledgeable about them. I work better with pictures/drawings of real parts - and although I am a construction guy and read blueprints and diagrams all day, the diagrams in the manuals baffle me.

I took a few photos. It's difficult to get goods photos without some disassembly, but I labeled the photos to show the hose connection points. The EGR port (forward port on base of carb) hoses are labeled 1. The TP port hoses (rear port on base of carb) hoses are labeled 2.

Hose 1 tees off to both BVSVs (lower BVSV is brown, upper BVSV is light blue) by the thermo housing. That point is not very clear in the hose layout diagram (Fig. 4-3). The tee is shown clearly in the hose schematic (Fig. 4-4).

Hose 2 goes to port 14 (forward-most port) of the VSV on the fender.

I have a 78 CA spec carb on the shelf if that would be of assistance to anyone...

I have a fully functional 1978 non-Cali spec w/ complete and fully functional rest-of-USA emissions (less then 70k original miles). Can take pics if needed. Can't help on the Cali specific stuff.

Thank you, Everyone! This helped me out a lot. SMOG passed with no issues once I figured out the correct hookups at the carb base. EGR/TP.

Now on to my Carb Cooling Fan. Yay! haha

Are you interested in selling it?

The emissions system or the LandCruiser? Definitely not going to separate the emissions components from the truck. Ain't broke - don't fix it. Plus the truck is worth much more w/ the working system vs. w/o for anybody in Cali. If the system did break....I'd probably desmog and carefully pack/save the entire system to keep with the truck. Would I sell the truck....depends on the #. I really like the FJ40 and have no plans to sell it. Having said that - I have too many cars and living in Chicago not a lot of space. Everything has a price.

EDIT - I do have several spare/core 1978 carb fan controllers (that mount under glovebox) which I'd sell. They would need work or conversion to modern guts (@unixman may be able to help).

I may be. I had purchased a new carb, but it was missing one port that was on the original. It was listed and company confirmed it was a 78 California carb setup.... have any pictures of the carb?
