After digging into my recently acquired FJ40 and looking the whole vehicle over I have noted quite a number of splices, wire connectors, non-original wiring colors for troubleshooting, etc.... and am considering buying a complete new wiring harness for the vehicle. The FJ has had an engine swap (Chevy 350 short block), 4 speed automatic transmission, and power steering ............ Looking for a complete harness that covers the whole vehicle with the original factory wire colors, completely labeled, and enough extra bundles to ensure I cover all the added gauges, sensors, etc....... from the original 76 FJ40 build. Not looking for the cheap one here or trying to cut corners but, looking for the best one so I can alleviate the electrical "I wonder what that went to"........... Seems some reviews on Painless, Automotive Highway, JEGS, etc............ any advice would be appreciated.

Painless type harnesses aren't necessarily painless. Stock wiring harnesses are no longer available. Your best bet is to repair the 1 you have. Maybe remove it and repair it. You need to find a factory wiring diagram for your year, so you can ID the stk wiring. You may have to remove some of the non stk wires and components to start, then get the stk stuff working, then start adding wiring for the additional fixtures. Coolermans website has diagrams, plugs and color correct wires.

I run sbc's in each of my 40's with manual tranny"s. The factory wiring can accommodate the sbc's requirements with minimal alterations. On my 75 I use the factory gauges except for the ammeter. The charging system has been altered for the gm internally regulated alternator.

Seems to be a common thread to simply pull and rebuild. I just found Coolermans site so I will check it out. Thanks for the quick reply.

What you are asking for is certainly possible. How much are you looking to spend to get what you are asking for?

As previously stated, you won't find a replacement harness that matches the factory wiring. When I installed a SBC into my FJ40 I looked at the factory wiring diagram to determine where the SBC wiring needed to be spliced in. Whoever did your conversion either did the same or paralleled the FJ40 wiring. You'll have to dissect it to determine the method used.

The wire is like 50 years old. When/if I do mine I'm only going to do like 6 colors but I going to buy/use a wire label machine and tag each wire at each end of the connections.

Well, he actually could. My business could absolutely build a complete correct colored 40 harness from scratch with custom accommodations for V8, automatic, EFI etc. Terminated, correct lengths, labeled and shipped so it could be installed by anyone themselves.

99% would not be interested at the price I would need to charge to make it worthwhile. Think like $6-8k range.
