I am having to pull the motor (6cyl) from my new project rig. I do not want to pull the tanny too. Are there only the two bolts at the top of the manual tanny? All else is unhooked. Yes, its been several years since my last rebuild, getting started again. Please help. Main issue is two stuck cyl after 12 years of storage. Thanks

pretty sure you're going to have to pull it all... engine has 4 mounts.. 2 in the front and 2 on the bellhousing.. the tranny does not have its own mounts so it cant just stay there :/

4 bolts hold the tranny to the bellhousing. 2 on the top from the outside, 2 on the bottom from the inside of the bellhousing.

Howdy! As already said, the tranny and transfer hang on the back of the bellhousing without any support from the frame. You need to either pull the whole thing as one unit, or drop the gearboxes from underneath, and then jerk the motor from above. How do you know there are two stuck cylinders? John

The four bolts that hold the tranny are on the outside....just changed the clutch on my 74' and once the hump is off and you have the tranny ready to remove (shafts off, supported, etc...) just unbolt the bolts and slide it off....

they are talking about the bellhousing - motor not bellhousing to tranny i believe.

Siezed for sure

I know the pistons are seized because it wont turn over. I pulled the head and the back cyl. Had a fair amount of rust around the piston edge, above the ring line. I also believe he next one may be stuck also. Ive tried all the old tricks but nothing worked. So, pull it is the option now. Like i said, been awhile since ive pulled one, but never a toyo, only fords. So any help would be great.

Inside or outside depends on three or four speed. 74 came out with a three speed than switched to a four speed. Three speed had two inside, two outside. Four speed had all four on the outside.

Ah ha! Good to know! Thanks guys... Mine's a 12/74' and forgot early 74s had the 3 spd.

Pull it all.... it is a lot less work.

Mark...

Its a 4 speed so i assume its a later date one. I am going to have a buddy come look at it with me next time im off shift. He is a mechanic and hopefully will be able to show me a few tricks too. I am sure i will need more guidance as the project builds! Thanks so far. R

you can do it however you want but, i support the tranny t case with a comealong and just pull the motor.problem on east coat is you can never get the tranny hump off so its easier that way .and in my mind a lot less work.usually take me a day to pull one out and put another back in good luck

I would separate them in the truck.

Once the trans is off the bellhousing, drop the oil pan [easier to do in the truck] and loosen all the bearings. Then you can rotate the flywheel to get the pressure plate bolts off [easier to do when the motor's off the ground] And you've got to get the pp bolts off to get the flywheel off, to get the bellhousing to block bolts out.

I've taken all six pressure plate bolts out without turning the flywheel. But I play guitar too, so my fingers are used to being contorted!

Good luck!

Mark A.

where in the bitteroot are you?
do you have a replacement motor yet?
follow Mark's advice,

if you need odds and ends, I've got a load of parts here in Helena.

i am in corvallis, just north of hamilton. What do you have for parts? I also have several i am looking to get rid of (nice complete top, doors, seats, original steering wheel, etc.) thanks, rob

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that it is actually the earlier 1974 models that had the 3 speed, which were actually 1973 production vehicles but marketed differently. 9/73 production and on were, I believe, all 4 speeds for the 1974 model year.

I have worked on SEVERAL 1974 [think rectangular 3 color rear turn signals] rigs with factory 3 speeds, and even a couple of 75s. I have worked on ONE 1976 with the factory 3 speed AND the FOUR SPEED TRANSFER CASE! That was a wild one!
