I have a 1974 FJ40 with spun bushings for the lower output shift gears. Ordered replacements and received bushings that fit a 75 not a 74. Any suggestions on who to call to order two bushings so that I can finish putting the transfer case together. If bushings are not available can I buy the replacement gears with the bushings that will fit a 74 T-Case? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. The weather is finally nice on the coast of Maine and it is time to get my FJ back in the mud.

Early bushings have been disco from Toyota for a long time now...

Best bet would be to source good used ones in a good used gear set.

If the bushings are junk, the main shaft is likely junk as well, and the gears cannot be that far behind, nor can the roller bearings...

Thanks for getting back to me. You are right, the main shaft was junk so replaced it with one from Specter. Roller bearings have been replaced. I am going to follow your suggestion and look for a set of low and high gears with good bushings. There is a set in the classifieds that came out of a 71 with a three speed. Newbie question-will those work with a 74 four speed. It looks like FJparts has a new set of OEM gears but they are closed until 7/30. Any suggestions for who to reach out to about a set of gears?

Thanks for your help.

If I have read correctly, I hope I have, the 74 4 speed t/c is basically the same as the 3 speed t/c. The gear that slides on the transmission output shaft is different. Everything else is the same.
