In need of a used parking brake drum. All I need is for the yoke to be in good shape (no groves) so to get a good seal with new rear oil seal. The drum can be in any shape since I will be turning it down and only using the yoke and bolt plate to attach rear axle to use with an older parking brake disc brake conversion I did over 20 years ago.

Thanks

If you just need a yoke, I am PRETTY sure a 10-spline differential pinion yoke will work for that. I think the seal OD is the same.

I have a few drums, stay tuned....

2 different styles on hand

Cruisermatt, when I contacted ManAFree (who I got the disc parking brake conversion kit way back when) they told me that the yoke dia and length was different on the front drive pinion yoke, and they could take the original drum (that has the yoke as part of it) and turn it down. I have found other newer conversion kits where that is exactly what needs to be done with their kits. Thanks for the response.

Drake2, Thanks for the response. I am not sure what style it was and do not have the drum parts anymore. The yoke I have now does not have studs but uses the bolts as shown in the first type of drum. Its going on the transfer case for a 1972 fj 40 where I adapted it to my 700r4 transmission many years ago. I have attached a pic of when I disassembled to install new oil seals. Mu old yoke has worn grooves that results in leakage.

Well, two of the three have grooves but the other does not have grooves, only witness marks. This is the one with the recessed spline (bottom of the 3) in my previous pictures. PM me if you're interested and I can ship today if you need it on the way quickly.

Thanks for the offer, how much do you want for it? Does it have any numbers on the casing or hub that I may be able to refrence to a new one? finally, is the bolt pattern for the driveshaft the same as the others? Thanks again.

Drake, @pardion is looking for the first drum, the one with the large studs.😉

I have done what you describing and turned down a drum on the lathe and it certainly does work. There are also speedi-sleeves available for the drums.

Sorry for the (not so smart question), what is a speedi-sleeve? Never mind, looked them up on the internet. May check further into this and thanks for the info.

No numbers on it and it is the smallest bolt pattern between the 3 styles

Drake2, I appreciate you looking into this and am wondering if you could take a few measurements for me, no rush. I would like to see using calipers the OD dimension of the 10-spline yoke, the overall length of yoke from back of drum to end of yoke, the dimension from end of yoke to where the diameter appears to be larger near the back of drum, the dimension at end of yoke to where the splines start (it looks like the splines are set-back) and finally the drive shaft bolt sizes and spacing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this is too much I totally understand.

I will try to get you the info tonight assuming I can find my caliper

  • I would like to see using calipers the OD dimension of the 10-spline yoke (45mm)
  • the overall length of yoke from back of drum to end of yoke (80mm)
  • the dimension from end of yoke to where the diameter appears to be larger near the back of drum (62mm)
  • the dimension at end of yoke to where the splines start (it looks like the splines are set-back) (set back 18mm and the ID is 36.5mm)
  • the drive shaft bolt sizes and spacing (see attached picture)

Cruisermatt, Thanks for the suggestion on the speedy-sleeve. I found that their part number 99177 was of the right size. I got one and it fit perfectly snug (had to make grind out the inside of a pvc pipe coupler to fit over sleeve and drive down further than their supplied tool would go) and used a small amount of JB Weld to fill in the grooves then drove sleeve on while wet. Wanted to post this incase others are having issues since the 10 spline brake drums are becoming hard to get and expensive.

Drake2, Thanks for the info and offer on the drum you had but yours was for an early model FJ (1958 - 68) and would not fit mine.
