Figured I would ask first. The wiring harness in my 78 FJ40 is pretty bad. I have an opportunity to purchase a used 72 FJ40 wiring harness locally but have some concerns.

Primarily, are there major differences in the tracer wire colors and the routing?

Also, I do not have to worry about smog.

I will spend some time with the 2 wiring schematics but I'm going to look at it in about 30 min and just thought about the possible differences

alternator is on the opposite side of the engine, wiper motor is in a different location, most of the switches are different, ignition switch is in column versus dash, etc, etc

probably not worth it even if it's free.

to Add to @3_puppies valued input , The 1972 harness if for a F engine equipped FJ40 , The 1978 harness is for a 2F equipped FJ40

IMO, They are both radically different in many Too many ways , U will have Not enough wires to work with using a 1972 harness on a 1978

U need to source at least a 2F harness , and one much closer to your 1978 production date .............

I only know a tiny fraction of what those guys ^^^^ know but I have a '76 that I'm using a parted out '72 to fix various rusted out body issues. I can tell you the virtually nothing behind the dash will be plug-n-play from one to the other. I'd strongly recommend shipping yours off to @Coolerman if he's still in the business. While I managed to clean, fix and re-wrap my front harness with only a few minor setbacks, I still wish I'd have just sent it to him. My rear harness was a crimp-splice wasteland and the replacement he made from scratch was plug and go!
