I love the steering wheel! great idea. I may steal that one. I've enjoyed watching the project. Keep up the good work. Are you staying with the 22R?

yea, the 22r has a cam and headers and is portmatched. so it runs good. only around 10k on the last rebuild also. will see how it works :D hopfully it will be a fun weeknd driver with ok gas milage :D :D

Shane, what is the thickest sheetmetal that bead roller will do? Your work looks great! Thanks for sharing.

Ed

I think the instructions say max is 16ga steel. i used it on the 18ga metal i was using and it worked great.

well got the seats installed. finaly figured out how i wanted them :D
I bought some trick tabs for the seats. i orderd a bunch online, but where not here in time, so i got shafted localy for 3 bucks a pop :shaking:
IMG_3849.JPG

i welded some plate to the bottom of the seats to help give them some strenght.

i even put the steering colum in. and tested it out. sits nice and steering wheel seems perfect.

worked on the steering wheel mount a little also. when i put my custom dash in, the part that holds the steering shaft (and ebrake) was no longer attached to the dash. so it was very flopy. and i dont think the ebrake would even work.
so, i fabed up a simple bracket to tie into those two pieces.

bottom side. man, i need to reweld that one :D :D

ok, now for a major issue. i sware that i measured this crap, but now this is going to be an issue.
here is a side shot. to me the front axle is too far back. but, as you see in the other pic, i am not sure what i can do. any ideas?
IMG_3857.JPG

and as you can see here. the axle is already pushed forward. the tir rod and drag link dont touch, but they get close.
IMG_3858.JPG

and as you can see, i dont really have any room to move the box forward
IMG_3859.JPG

man, my parents always told me to plan things out :D oh well :D :D

oh, and on another note, i am tieing the cage into the frame. so that part is hard mounted, but the body is usaly rubber mounted. is there any reasion why i shouldnt just hard mount the body also?

SHane

Nice truck. It is looking very good. As has been said before I can only wish for the equipment and time to do a build like this. I will be checking in regularly for updates.

Looks like you could lengthen to front frame horns that would get your springs forward like a fj40 frame, then your front axle can move forward and even better a longer wheel base.

but my steering box cant go more forward with out hacking up the stock front grill. as my tie rod is almost hitting my drag link. i wonder if i coudl go to lukes arms which puts the tie rod benind the axle. mnnnnn

yep, looks like a FJ60 steering box is in order :D

Shane

If I had the money to throw in the saginaw i'd sell ya my used fj60 stuff (box pump n lines) for dirt cheap just to get it off my rig, the way it is setup doesn't work to well for a 40 series chassis, bet it would work killer on a mini chassis though ;)

well, got the center body mounts almost done.
i have some extra bracing under the center of the car. and this will tie into it.
IMG_3868.JPG

and in place. this will attache to that large 2x2 bar that goes from side to side, and to th back part of the stock tub.
IMG_3869.JPG

and with the body mount. i decided to rubber mount the body and tie the cage into these same mounts. trying to keep it clean.
IMG_3870.JPG

a pic of it tac welded on the truck.

next up was the frame part of the body mount. i decided to make a set like the stock ones. i would have just reused those, but i was sawzaw happy when i removed them :D
this is what i started with this :D
IMG_3871.JPG

i cut the top piece to go over the frame. and the other piece is the starting of the bracing
IMG_3873.JPG

i put a tac weld in the center and bend the bracing around the top piece. super simple.
