I broke one of my power mirrors on LJ78. I see there are quite a few regular 70 series manual mirrors out there still; even brand new. Anyone know if the power mirror guts can be transferred into the manual mirrors?

Thanks!

Hello,

It is possible but it is not practical.

There are two actuators inside the mirror's body that are easy to remove. Make sure you have enough lithium grease for their ball joints.

The point where the mirror body joins the mirror mount is the problem. The mirror body is held with a ring clip that is a bit hard to put in without breaking.

It is better to get a new mirror.

Thanks Juan. Yes, I know that clip! Impossible to get back on. That's part of problem with my original mirror. Okay, maybe just go full manual then with new mirror. Don't think power ones are available anymore (probably expensive if they were)

Hello,

They were never cheap to begin with. It is likely they are still available. However, I am afraid to ask how much they cost.

If (and that is a big if) the ring is intact, it is possible to bend the lips a little to put the mirror body in, and then straighten the lips. It is very hard to do without breaking the clip.

Maybe there are affordable aftermarket power mirrors for sale on, for instance, eBay.

I took 12V new mirrors, transfered the 24V motors over. It was not very easy to remove the mirror from the housing to do it but it can be done. In fact, it was pretty difficult and don't think it was intended to be a serviceable part. It was even harder to snap it back into place like Juan pointed out.

It isn't something I wanted to do again. When I broke one of the new mirrors by hitting it while pulling into my carport and was too close to the brick, I said f-it and just got new manual mirrors. They look better anyways with the black body over the chrome body of the power ones IMHO.

Below is what it looks like when the mirror is removed.

Thanks very much. Your experience seals my decision, haha!

I recently saw new VDJ7x power mirrors for sale; not sure if the electrical plugs would match up but the mirror itself should be bolt on (and 12v too). IIRC they were about $180US each.

Here’s the thread, might have been a bit off on applicable models but it looks like they should work for Prado and other 12 volt 70-series.

I think I have a line on two used pwr mirrors, but if it falls through, I'm going to follow up on your suggestion. Will know tomorrow.

Those have the “breakaway” feature where they snap back into position after folding in?
