NM, lots of interesting and helpful info there.

I'm not in a hurry as I have a very capable 60, which was originally built and designed to by my long term vehicle. However, rust in the roof and pillars in an other wise rust free 60 has me hunting for something else. Repairing the rust is just not worth it and it will come back again. Very disappointing. I which I could ignore the mall look of the 80, 100, 200 series vehicles as the search would be easy! But I just don't like the look. No offense to those who love them and I understand they are bullet proof!

A left or right hand drive is fine, but a 6 cylinder engine that would except a turbo is a must. I don't mind giving up a bit of horse power for a diesel within reason!

So to understand better: Which truck has the 1hz engine and what years were the hzj75 vs hj75 truck made? 25yr rule and all. What engine does the older hj75 have?

I have been doing research, but some of this stuff is very nuanced and I would hate to learn the hard way.

The HJ75 has the 2H diesel whereas the HZJ75 has the 1HZ (available from 1990 and beyond I believe).
My 1985 HJ75 Ute has the 2H (6 cylinder) Diesel engine.

I can speak from personal experience that the move from the 5.7 V8 in a 200 to a NA 3B in the 73 I have is ..... well ..... underwhelming ;)

That said, the driving experience in the 73 is more back to basics and visceral in an odd way. And I always have a big sh-t eating grin on my face when I am driving it.

Careful Sam, Much like texting and driving, driving with a big sh*t eating grin on your face can be very distracting.

Is the 1hz a more modern version of the 2h and is there that much power difference if a turbo is used?

Elkaholic, just sitting in either of my Land Cruisers causes me to have poo eating grin! Turning the ignition key is the cream on top!

2H / 1HZ ...... Totally different animals
2H.....Think old school / 1HZ ..... Well not old school.

I just came across an interesting tread on an Australian forum concerning 2H vs 1HZ. I think I would lean to the 2H.

"I think I would lean to the 2H" .......
People will question your sanity. ;)

After reading the Australian tread all the way through, I did lean in both directions!

To be honest, I'm still a bit green behind the ears about the 75 series to make any real decisions. But, I have a lot more info now to help me ask the right questions or more to the point at least better understand the answers.

There are plenty of folks in the 70 Series section that are willing to help. Good luck with your search.

You guys have been outstanding! Thanks for all the help!

I could have searched for week and still not understood the details of the information I was looking at. The 40, 55, 60 and 80 series we get here are pretty straight forward to understand, but the world spec Land Cruisers are a whole other story!

I think I'm going to enjoy my search!

Jerry,
Just remember that most of the 7x that come up on the market are going to be similar in age and condition to your 60.

Now lets look at some things to also consider:
Aus. and North America are very different in regards to Toyota parts markets. The 2H was marketed in Canada in the form of HJ60s so they are in the system, but parts for those from my understanding are drying up due to the fact that the motor is no longer in production. Kinda like the 2F and 3FE, you can still source parts but it's getting harder and the days are numbered compared to the more modern offerings like the 1FZ and 2UZ.. With the newer 1HZ (90+ troppies) that were sold to mining companies in NA, you can go to your favorite Toyota Parts guru; ie Dan or Beno and still get a brand spanking new 1HZ block, that's pretty cool.

Since my 74 is more of just a fun all around, get my feet wet in Toyota/Non US diesel Land Cruiser, I wasn't as concerned with the parts availability or perfect condition of the rig, the 13BT(turbo 4cyl, close to the feel of the 1fz on the road) works out just fine and I accept the extra effort/time it takes in searching for parts.
If it was my go to overland/expo rig I think I would have held out a few years for the 1HZ due to all the positives we already discussed.

Really it comes down to how much you what to have a 7x and how much extra effort you are willing to put forth in order to support it.(I really wanted one) A 2H or 1HZ are both doable but I think the 1HZ is going to be more sustainable for the long run.

Have fun in the search/spiral to 70 ownership!

Good insights NM.

My plan is for a long term overland/expo rig. I do a number of long distance trips a year and a wagon or troopy fits the bill perfectly. If I'm going to replace the 60, I like the idea of upgrading to the 75 for the diesel and bullet proof platform. It's too bad these trucks are so old to start and there are so few to pick from. These trucks seem pretty simple and once they are made road worthy, they should stay that way a long time. Other than the rust, my 60 is also bullet proof with very little to go wrong. It really is a third world tough as nails truck.

One way or another, I'm not in a hurry and it would be smart to wait till next year just for the updated engine.

Although 1990 is the magic date for the 1HZ powered Cruisers, don't anticipate them flooding into the U.S. (Contrary to what many think, sourcing and importing a GOOD Cruiser is a time consuming event)
It would be in your interest to contact an importer (several on 'MUD) and start searching for the vehicle of your choice.

19788hj45, I hear you! Combined with right place/right time, patience is golden and I do want a GOOD Cruiser. Not just any Cruiser.

If it is an expedition rig you long for, then perhaps Toyota isn't the right choice. How about a Mitsu? You could build a budget Earthcruiser clone on a retired Japanese fire truck. Little rust, relatively low miles, 7.5 litre diesel, 4WD, cab for 6, etc. Excellent parts support and you can turbo the monster for extra giggles. This one is a 1990 registration year, so legal to bring in as of January.

Interesting idea, that would be quite a truck and with the ability to put out camp fires! The fire truck conversion might be a bit over the top for me!

I think, a nice rust free 60 or 75 will fit the bill perfectly. Either can be used as a daily driver or on the road/overland.

Forget the 60 Series.....
The coolest of cool drive a 75 Series. :hillbilly:
