It looks like the broken hose just on top of the valve cover goes to the carb base spacer, shouldn't the hose from the PCV go there? Looks like hose from the PCV is going to the air cleaner.

Yes hose with PCV at the oil fill tube should go to the base of the carburetor in the spacer. Valve cover hose goes the air cleaner.

Post camping tinkering this afternoon. Nothing overly glamorous; pulled the aux tank and was pleasantly surprised with what was uncovered underneath.
Thought you guys would enjoy some of the toys that were bouncing around the trunk, 40 year old oil cans and all.

Yeah, wow, what a gem. I spy some original red lap belts too. Bet those will clean up nicely.
I would probably pull the seats and the fuel tank to drain it properly and clean out underneath. Pretty easy to do and will allow you to clean that interior thoroughly, and maybe even see if you can remove some of the Black spray paint.

My best guess is a late night enjoying a bottle and he thought to himself “I know how to make this thing look EXTRA bad arse…”
Maybe? I’m not sure. It’s akin to teenagers and plastidip on their first car. Regardless, I am not a fan and would like to remove as much as possible without damaging the blue underneath… a worry for another day.
Will keep chipping away in two hour nap time windows. How do you eat an elephant?

Advice has been spot on. Clean it up, work on a list of getting it safe. I would personally try to work on the engine first, turn over by hand like everyone stated. If you have a seized/bad engine and the tcase is bad, you definitely have options and choices to make.
It’s not fully original like others stated, it’s close.
Previous owners do strange things. My parents had a dune beige FJ40, I think 76 or 77 that they repainted to baby blue possibly with house paint.
This is me getting a haircut at the KOA in ouray, CO in 1979/80 in front of that 40.
No expenses spared in the FJBen household
