Miss-matched distributor gears, became known, and you could change gears. This continues today with many hot rods, sbc etc.; although it is miss-matched materials grinding the other gear to bits within weeks/months.. (then your engines filled with metal)!

Read Comp Cams website, or installation sheet (you also will have voided your warranty). Started doing this on some engine at one point years ago but luckily noticed timing seemed to be getting loose. (Lucked out on metal shavings) I’m scared and cautious (research) whenever changing any distributor now (at least compare old and new side by side)
