Miss-matched distributor gears, became known, and you could change gears. This continues today with many hot rods, sbc etc.; although it is miss-matched materials grinding the other gear to bits within weeks/months.. (then your engines filled with metal)!

Read Comp Cams website, or installation sheet (you also will have voided your warranty). Started doing this on some engine at one point years ago but luckily noticed timing seemed to be getting loose. (Lucked out on metal shavings) I’m scared and cautious (research) whenever changing any distributor now (at least compare old and new side by side)

Welp, here I am again.

Sourced myself an axle, and went a little spend happy on various sites. I now have enough to keep me busy for the foreseeable future, issue is finding time to wrench with a three year old and 5 month old… minor details.

Anyhow, it was recommended to me that I should probably find a knuckle centering tool prior to starting this project. Anyone on here have success without it? Anyone want to rent me one?

Sorry for the radio silence, was celebrating a birthday for my kiddo and camping all weekend. I knew it had been a while because Richard called to check on me this afternoon, all is well just busy (no excuse!).

Don't assume that your axle needs a knuckle rebuild, right out of the box.

Unless you know it's shot (something is floppy-loose that shouldn't be, or it's full of rusty water), just install it, reconfigure the brakes as needed, and enjoy the ride. If the knuckles leak a little 90wt for a bit, it won't hurt a thing. Don't let 'rebuilt' be the enemy of 'on the truck' (at least in this case).

Enjoy your family time, and involve the kids as you go - I have lots of cute pix of kids turning lug wrenches with (likely) no idea what they were doing. One daughter now loves fixing her '00 4Runner and the other is a mechanical engineer in the steel industry. I'd like to think I had a hand in that.

Guy I bought the axle from recommended the rebuild kit, ordered from Valley Hybrids. George was awesome and super helpful. Hoping I didn’t jump the gun with that kit as it doesn’t have any glaring issues… oh well.

One other thing, I’m trying to source a couple brackets for my carb, I went with the Fuji from CityRacer. I need the throttle return spring bracket and the bracket to thread the throttle cable itself onto to adapt my cable to it. If anyone has any leads, wants to send me some dimensions, OR wants to let me borrow theirs so I can make a copy (or ask for Broski’s help, go to his shop and watch him work his fabrication magic), I would be forever grateful.

The Knuckles need to be swapped out as that's what the calipers bolt to and why it was best to just buy the hole 60 series front axle. At that point it's best to just do a full rebuild as it's all apart. IMO it just a good idea for peace of mind.

I also think it's a right of passage for any new Land Cruise owner to do a knuckle rebuild

The worst part is all the cleaning, the rest is enjoyable /satisfying
If it was me I would get the 60 axle torn down and get the knuckle & hubs cleaned up and painted ahead of time and all ready to go.

I love the idea of have the kids play along

I always bought a whole 40 series disc brake axle. Few I bought (76-78 and 84) had 4.11:1 ring and pinion.

That’s great but that's not what's happening. I think the 40 stuff is harder to find and why he grabbed the 60 axle.

I'm not a 40 guy just trying to help out, It's my understanding that the 60 stuff will work . I do know the for the disk brakes to work the knuckles need to be swapped over.
Again I'm just helping out for the love of the Land Cruiser community, So if you have something more constructive to add or know where Ryley could procure a 40 disk axle please do.

I do think what he has will work, If I'm wrong pleas let us know. In closing it was not my idea to go this direction but I believe it will work

Who is he? He as in me? Apologies, I should have been more clear, the axle I have procured is from a fj62. Hence the talk of knuckle rebuilding/kits/etc.
