Before I spend the $ for a OEM part, are there any ready-to-go vacuum transfer solenoids that could work without modifying?

Have searched all the sites, but most entries are older, and involve some mods to make it work.

Has anyone found a replacement in the meantime?

Appreciate any info.

Still waiting for the disco stripes.

I used mac valves for replacements in my 62, search mac valves on mud for a desciption of how to set it up. It as easy as snipping off the old leads, wiring up the new valves, and running some new hose to hook it all up. I just reused my stock bracket by spinning it 180 degrees and ziptieing my solenoids soldidly to the bracket. Its real close to the washer nozzle but hey it works. The whole mod cost me less than 50 dollars. I even found some nice breathers on an old jeep.

I have seen that list of the MAC stuff, does MAC sell all of that? Or is it a valve from MAC, the muffler from here, the parker from there etc etc.?

I don't even know what half that stuff is....

I like the idea of a more direct control, but i don't have a lot of time to piss around with the truck.

I appreciate all your insights.

Ideally i would make it a full manual by modifying the T-case, has anyone done that?

When you go to mac valve's website, they have a list of distributors accross the US, find the one in your state and give them a call. They should be familiar with those valves and can probably help you out with the fittings. Youll need 4 1/4 inch npt barb fittings to hook the vacuum lines up with, and 2 breathers of some kind also 1/4 npt. Make sure you ask for some free flowing ones, the ones i bought with my valves ended up being these tightly packed brass plugs, they didnt let air move fast enough. I ended up getting some off of an old jeep (dont tell anyone). If you dont have time for a manual valve setup, then dont even think about converting to a shifter.

do a search, can't remember if it was here or on pirate in the land cruiser section. Someone found a Camry EGR valve that is the exact same thing this is something like $20 or $30 from the dealer. Either that or find this valve used. Sorry no part numbers to post...

I really do need to get that writeup finished, damn.

Anyhoo, here's the short and sweet of what I did:

Manual 5-way toggle pneumatic valve, mounted into my dash: $30

Filter/vent fittings and 1/8" fittings to hold the vacuum lines onto it: $10

Bit of work to route three vacuum hoses into the cab (vacuum source from intake manifold, 2WD line and 4WD line): free

Not having to pay $200+ for a new solenoid assembly from Toyota and having a part that will last longer than my Cruiser will: PRICELESS :D

It's kind of greek I know, but it IS the short n' sweet version. I'll do my best to have the complete writeup finished and submitted to Woddy by the weekend.

Spook, how quick does your tcase shift with the manual setup? I need to redo some of my hoses i think and perhaps improve the wiring, but when its cold outside the vacuum shift is often very slow. You have any issues with your setup?

No issues at all. With the vacuum valve, shifting is instantaneous.

From the 3FE files:
Toyota Celica idle up solenoid part # 88690 2B340 about $15 from C Dan or any Toy dealer for a couple of bucks more. Plug and play and I've done it myself - it works fine with only the need to replace the 62's electrical connectors with some female spade lugs to fit the new solenoid's pins. For that price I can't imagine why anybody would want to make things much more complicated.

Going to pick nits with Steve again.

Chopping wires isn't plug&play. If you want to keep the same connector (though it's true, spade connector'd solenoids are MUCH more common) there's one in '86 Camry engine bays. Suzuki Samurai's also had one that matches the pin types.

Don't understand why Toyota went with the whacky connector type. I grabbed a dozen or so solenoids with the spade connectors at a u-pull for $1. If mine go again, I'll probably hack my wiring. Much easier to find as they come in just about every toyota small car in the 80s-early 90s.

Ken, do the solenoids you refer to fit the 62s stock mounting bracket? Sorry if cutting off two connectors and crimping on two new ones is too technical for you. :D

taken from the linked thread,

"Well I went to the salvage yard today. I looked at all
the Toyota's I could find in the mid to late 80's. I
found an 1987 Toyota Van. On the side of the motor
towards the rear passengers side you will find the
three port 12VDC vacuum switch needed for the 2WD
replacement. Guess what... it uses the same plug that
the Cruiser does... just shave off the tit and remove
the switch from the bracket and swap it with the one
from the cruiser.... bolt everything back on and
walla... it works... YES! No wire cutting and
splicing... I am sure an 1988 or even an 1989 Toyota
Van would work just as well.... I am very happy."

I talked to my toyota parts guy and he gave me the part number for the solenoid in the location of the above referenced '87 toyota minivan. It is 88606-28010. My question is what do you do with the 3rd port? Or do the solenoids on the FJ62 have a port that I am not seeing?

Could the third port be for the breather vent? The stockers have the two prongs for the vacuum hoses and another hole for the breather to stick into.

I don't know, I can't figure out if Dunbar is the guy that actually did the swap from the minivan or if he was just pasting stuff over from the 3fe list. I guess I will PM him later.

But the parts guy said it had 3 hoses coming from it.

They all fit that bracket. Most come off a bracket that is identical.

from what I understand, the third port is a breather vent. it just lacks the air filter that covers the vent on the solenoids on the FJ62.

eshelbyk recommended a plug and play option from an 83-86 Camry. It has unfortunately been discontinued.

The search continues.
