My 1988 FJ62 has been running fairly well, but the other day all of a sudden it would'nt start. The engine turns over fine, just never fires up. I did a quick check and there is spark at the plugs and I can here the fuel pump running.

Any suggestions on what I should do next?

how is your hoses to start with, breather and all of that.is there any wire connections loose, have you checked for fire coming out of the plug wires, and my last question is the check engine light on.or better yet was it on before it quit running

The plugs do have fire. I don't really know what to look for on the hoses, breathers, etc. The check engine light may have been on before this happened, now it is on when you have the ignition in the "On" position....but isn't that normal?

check the hoses to make sure theirs no rips or holes and to see if any of the ones that are used for smog and used for vacume have poped off their propper place. if that all looks good i would check your air filter make sure its clean if not get another one try it again

I would really be suprised if a hose (vacuum or smog, etc) would not let it start. Sounds like something fuel related to me. When you checked for spark, did you pull a plug? Did it appear it was getting gas? Fuel filter changed lately?

If you are getting spark, then fter trying to start it go and loosen the cold start injector's fuel bolt and if gas sprays out then you are good to that point. Then you may need to pull the cold start injector to see if it is gummed up. Any recent tune-ups or the like done to the 3FE?

As far as a tune up, this spring I put in all new plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, and air filter.

I didn't pull the plug to check the spark, just pulled the wire and checked to the top of the plug.

Also, the engine had been pinging under load pretty bad lately...even after using premium octane fuel. Could this be a hint?

Thanks

I know this will sound weird, but what is the condition of your battery? I had the same problem recently after my truck had been sitting for awhile. I had fuel, spark, and air, but my battery was not turning the starter fast enough to start the truck. Long story short, I swapped in a new battery and the FJ-62 started right up......

yes, go back and change the fuel filter.or at least check it .also start with the egr unlikely it would keep you running completly but it could not hurt.even if you hear the fuel pump does not mean its getting to the injecters.after that if you find the fuel filter good starting looking at a fuel pressure test on the fuel system you can find the specs here on mud.im thinking if your filter is good its your fuel pressure regulater.if your fire is good and all of that.

Here's an update:

1) I changed the fuel filter today
2) Put in a fresh battery and turned the engine over quite a few times.
3) Loosened the banjo bolt at the cold start injector and there was only a small drop of fuel that came out

Any suggestions? Is there an easy/best way to check if the fuel pump is working....could it be a bad fuel pump?

ha man try this just for s***s and giggles take yor tps of and try to start it and get back with me.check the spring and crap in it and see if it returns properly.i drove without my tps .so i know it will start without it

or you can just umplug it first and see if it makes any difference.my code 51 showed up on mine and the code went away after jim changed it out

I have similar prob with my 88 FJ62 but mine is intermittent. Mostly it starts right up but sometimes it turns and turns but just won't catch for awhile. other times it catches right away then dies and won't start for awhile. Seems to do this less when I use premium in it and maybe see a connection to hot weather. Very interested to see more ideas. Plan to try suggestions so far. What is TPS?

Btdaffe - did you get it running? Would love to hear your results since it may help with my problem.

Thanks for the TPS Definition. Good to have some leads now. this is a great Forum. I've been going thru it and have found lots of great stuff.
