60 Series vs. the 80 Series

I dunno, it really boggles my mind to hear CRUISER people complaining about the highway ride of a 60. We're talking 60 series here, not 40! Guess it's all relative to one's experience and tastes, but I enjoy driving my 62 more than anything else I've been in. It's not underpowered either, unless you feel a need for jackrabbit starts or high speed towing adventures.

Gumby,

The 60 is full of glass, actually has more sq. in. than the 80. I like that, more visibility, right?
The 60 I drove, you could feel a few bumps on a rough road, was not bad at all, but I am comparing the ride to my 4-Runner.
So from what I am reading here the big drawback to the 60 is the suspension, which is rough, compared to the 80, and the undersized motor, and lockers.
Does that sum it up?

That abouty sums it up but I would add that there is far less to go wrong with a 60.

That sums it up except for the fact that you get more looks from girls in with a 60. That's because 80's are usually driven by girls so chicks assume it's just another girl when they see one going down the road. :flipoff2:

Eventhough I suggested an 80 would be better for what you want to do, I had stick up for the coolest LC series. :D

MoJ,

Gas mileage is a minor consideration in the whole scheme of things.

No actually the 40 series is still the coolest, especially in Colorado in the summer on top of a 14,000 foot peak, perfect weather, top off, nobody around. Might as well own the world. (But 60s are second coolest.)

Now, hang on there. My 40 gets far more looks than anything, and my 80 with the snorkel gets so much attention it drives me nuts. I'm thinking girls don't really go for the station wagon look of the 60. Might as well put fake wood paneling on it. :D j/k :D

Gumby,

Great idea, lol.

Around here (northern california) the 80 series is a dime a dozen. Every soccer mom has their 80 series nice and shiney clean, never seen off-road. I would guess that %80 of the drivers (around here anyway) are women. I have both 97' FZJ-80, and an 88' FJ-62. People always ask me about the FJ-62 ("What kind of car is that?" is the most popular question, even when it was stock!!) Nobody is really that concerned with the 80 because they are so common. Now one of the lamest things on my FZJ-80 is the factory lockers, bad design in my opinion. They engage only some of the time, that is on my list of repairs/replacement. Now a 60 series that has factory lockers comes with cable lockers, that is what I am going to convert my FZJ-80 to, much more reliable. The 80 is pretty comfortable, but the 62 is not that bad. I put 100,000 miles in 3 years on my lifted FJ-62 and when I stopped driving it it had 300,000 miles on the original motor tranny and t-case. Personally I like the FJ-62 the best but everyone is different. The 62s are slightly narrower and lighter. A lifted 80 series is almost as rough as my OMEd FJ-62 on road, haven't been off road in the 97 too much yet. The FZJ-80 has coils, full floating front & rear, reverse cut diff. gears, ABS, larger axles and steering components, full time 4WD, and in some cases lockers. I still prefer my FJ-62. They are both good.

How can we compare? The nice thing about Land Cruisers is that the 40, 45, 55, 60/62, 80, 100 etc. are all such different but capable 4x4 trucks. Each has sooo much character. Unlike Jeep, Toyota has kept the quality of the Curiser going, yes even in the 100. Of course they are becoming more and more SUV/soccermom/americanized to appeal to the mass public, yet Toyota has kept the offroad durability and legacy of the LC alive. Any choice you make when buying a land cruiser is a good decision. IMHOP.

Your choic in model is totally up to you. I suggest test-driving a few to find what you like best.

I'm going to have to agree with gumby... just cause he'll probably smack me if I dont... but yea, the 80 is the way to go... 93+ that is. and lockers are a must. But i will say that the 60's have a nice nostalgic feel to em'. cant beat that.

I have been known to smack down a student from time to time, but nothing serious. :D

Gumby,

Your a rough kind of guy eh?
LOL

Ok next question?

Is the cargo space in the 62 identical to the 60 (Space behind 2nd Row Seats)
The 60 I drove was large enough for two adults to sleep back there. The length and width of the space was incredible.

Thank for all your input on this post.

With the seats down yes. Unless you are extremely short,.

When I drove my HJ60 back from Jackson Hole Wy I averaged 24 mpg.

That was at 70mph too.

That mpg came from the original 2H. I now have a 1994 1HZ in her.

As soon as I get her back I'll post my mpg with that engine.
