I got to find a good one first! It might be easier now that the guy at school saw the FJ45LV, that to Guatemalans' is too old but us gringo's want! He's got a more "Cruiser aligned" perspective now. It's not an issue of how much bling there is.

btw. Post up or PM with the location details and I'll see if it works.

I am in the SF area with my HJ60, and I would like to check out your intercooler as well... What happens on Wednesdays?

just a quick update, now that I have my gauges hooked up (copied someone on this board, and put autometer guages in "pods" on the A-pillar. much less obtrusive then a "ricer" A-pillar Pod.)

as a reminder, this is an Onan L634t, 3.4liter, IDI, factory turbo, six cylinder. 5 speed, 33's, 3.73 gearing. Fuel is still factory set. I suspect that my injectors are tired. And I also think my timing is a bit retarted.

Around town EGT's are about 500-650F. On the freeway, 5th gear, they are 800-1000 (freeway had some slight hills) with 8-10PSI boost. The boost is noticably lower then before the intercooler. It used to easily hit 15PSI on hills and accleration. Now it hit's 8PSI, then creeps up to 12. I wonder if I should adjust the wastegate? Or, run the wastegate pressure line directly to the intake manifold (right now, the wastegate senses the boost right at the turbo).

Found a long uphill. From a start, I did full accleration, till I was in 4th at 70MPH. The EGT touched just over 1200F. Hotter then I thought it'd get.

Some thoughts: could leaky injectors (which, presumably, would result in too much fuel at the wrong time) cause high EGT? Will advancing the timing lower my EGT?

I was hoping it was about 200 or 300 degrees lower all the way around... so that I could turn my fuel up. (sheesh, i wonder how hot it was getting without the intercooler?).

what do you guys think?

oops, sorry. pyro is before turbo.

if'n it were after, that motor would be molten, eh?

I'd set the wastegate controller to read at the intake manifold, same as the boost gauge. It's irrelevant what the boost at the intercooler inlet is. The boost limit is to avoid blowing out head gaskets so I say turn it up! If you safely ran 15psi before turn up the boost to get 15 psi again!
Higher boost will drop the EGT's I'm told.

Exactly what I was thinking. ;)

I would turn up the fuel and boost. When I was inquiring about a volvo intercooler I have I was told that the only way to offset the cooler air comming into the engine and to utilize the available power is to turn up the fuel. Turn up the boost now because you can.

That's my non-professional, hearsay informed advice.

Edit: what turbo does your Onan have? I've never played with mine on the 6AT was but told it was non-wastegated?

have you looked at your turbo to see if it is wastegated? You can see the actuator, and the rod, and the arm that controls the valve. The rod is adjustable. I think they all had the same turbo... but who knows.

I don't have it nearby :frown: but looking at some pics, you're right. It's not something I ever looked at.

So what are the pros and cons to increasing the boost. I haven't been willing to do it since I haven't yet installed the intercooler.

740 volvo intercooler

FWIW, I have my intercooler out of my '87 Volvo 740 right now (due to a turbo rebuild) and could measure and photo document if anyone is interested.

Mike

The Volvo intercooler fits perfectly around a FJ55 and works well for a FJ40. Won't for a FJ60 though. I would turn it up, maybe see if you can get your injectors rebuilt. I think cheapest quote I got was about $30 each, not too bad...

Hey folks:

This is a great thread. I just finished a 13BT swap and am interested in intercooling. I've got tons of room in between my radiator and fan, and haven't fabbed my shroud yet because I wanted to make up my mind about an intercooler first. I've got a couple questions for you:

1. Have any of you intercooled guys noticed a change in fuel economy? I was told that you have to increase boost to compensate for the increased distance the compressed air has to travel from the turbo. I'm wondering if increasing boost and turning up the fuel will affect mpg. Seems like it should.

2. I like the looks of the saab unit. I didn't keep my ac, so the condensor is gone as is all the other ac garbage. I was thinking about moving my radiator and stock shroud back towards the motor and slipping the intercooler where the radiator was. Here's a pic of the space (yes my motor is just a wee bit crooked--the tranny matched up perfectly, however). What do you think?

Your pics and info are great.

Where can boost reading be taken near intake? Just put a fitting on the intake tube from the intercooler?
I don't know what my mileage was before or after, but the temps are the important part. I know my temps went down.

well...............? i'm thinking of the same intercooler set up for my 60. i just scored a intercooler from a volvo 760turbo today.

i'd like to see how you set yours up, and what you used for plumbing etc...

thanks for the pics, in advance!

John,
I'd have the wastegate read at the intake as well as the boost gauge. It's irrelevant what's happening at the intercooler inlet. Your concern is what's going on at the intake 'cause that affects the engine.
