Planning on running the 60 series e brake on my 40 build and was hoping that someone else had done this and maybe has some recommendations/ PICTURES of how it was routed and where you put the brake handle...

Thanks,

Keith

Are you talking about mounting the handle to the floor?

Ran mind all the way up the center of the anti-wrap bar, And the handle is right next to the shifter on the trans tunnel

yes. Essentially the same way that the 60 series is in the rig.

Did you have to size the cable at all, or did it fit without cutting?
Anything weird that you had to do with the adjuster?

Thanks for the input!

I snagged the whole assembly from a PnP 60..."cash for clunkers" deal.

The cable was perfect fit for me, I have a spring over fj40 with 55 rear springs.
I just adjusted the drums and nut on cable. Not hard to do at all (its like two; ten mm nuts for mind)
I try to snap some shots soon

Id appreciate that.
It always good to have a visual reference.

Im running an FJ40 width FF from a late model 40 w/ the same brakes as a 60. First thing is that you have to have an axle w/ a 4 bolt brake flange to make 60 style brakes work. (so no early housings unless you want to do some custom mounts for the backing plates) Also you can run a e-brake cable from a79-83 FJ40 which is shorter in width and length than a 60 cable.

Im using 60 series axles f/r, so that is covered...what about this FJ40 cable?
I thought they were ALL the t case drum style?
In any case...this cable you speak of will work better for this application?

Thanks for the info

Keith

OK, so the 79-83 FJ40s used a floor mounted e-brake handle w/ a FJ60 style rear axle and brakes. The Axle is FJ40 width so the 40 cable will be a few inches to narrow for a 60 housing. The sheath that runs to the handle is also several inches shorter because of the shorter wheelbase of the 40.

This is a post 79 cable w/ a handle and cover from an FJ60

PS i did this same thing to a FJ55 and had to use a 60 cable and shorten the part between the rear drums 2".

RAD!
Thanks for the pics! That gives me an idea as to where to go with it.
I pilfered the handle and cables from the 60 series I got the rear axle from, so the only one that would be in question as to its length would be the handle back to the housing.
I should "theoretically" be good.

Thanks again!

Not exactly true, my 79 has the t-case mounted e-brake, they didnt make the switch until they started putting the split case in the FJ40 which I believe was in 80 (possible late 79).

1980 was the changeover

08/80 and later; 1981 year. 07/80 and previous had the one piece transfer case and parking brake on the t-case.
