Okay, getting ready to pull my axles on my 1984 Fj60 and was wondering where to get rebuild kits. Do places like Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, etc. carry kits for these axles? Where would be a good place to go, and what kinda price should I expect?

forget about being able to buy much of anything locally....

Call Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters (he has a web site), or Georg at Valley Hybrids.... both good sources for parts.

X2 and upgrade the seals to Marlin seals if you plan on doing much off-roading.

Call Kurt at cruiser outfitters and up grade to the marlin seals..also go to napa and buy a brass hammer, it'll run ya about 40 bucks but it is well worth the investment. You will use it to get to cone washers out and also to tap in the new races...don't use a regular hammer you will destroy the threads and races....the way I did it is place the brass hammer on the bolt and whack it with a 4 lbs sledge...popped right out. Good luck and take your time.

wouldn't it just be easier to buy the whole kit from marlin that already includes their seals? or is there some advantage in getting the Cruiser Outfitters kit and then buying marlin's seals separately? i assumed all the other parts in the kit would be the same quality, independent of where you buy it.

I've been wondering the same thing.

I hear about the Marlin seals a lot on the forum, I don't hear too much about people sourcing parts through them. I'm not sure why. I do hear Kurt (Cruiser Outfitters) and Georg (Valley Hybrids) mentioned a great deal when it comes to needing kit for your rig.

I sourced my knuckle rebuild kit, bearings and upgraded seals from Kurt because he was offering a lower price than Marlin at the time and quality parts to boot.

Also don't assume all kits are created equal; do your research so you know exactly what you're getting. I was looking at another vendor, not mentioned here, and the parts they were offering weren't the same quality as Kurt. Their price was cheaper, but you gets what you pay for I suppose.

I've done multiple purchases from Kurt and have always been :):p;p:D:grinpimp::clap:

I guess that is x4 for Kurt on this thread...

You are not buying the Marlin seals separately you are "upgrading" to the Marlins with Kurt. Kurt is a major contributor on the forums here and great to work with so I would rather give him my business due to his contribution in our section.

Where you purchase is up to you but I would rather support Kurt as a thank you for all the knowledge that he empowers us with here.

most of us ( cruiser shop owners and parts sellers ) carry the same rebuild kits. if i were you, i would want to purchase a kit with them OEM KOYO bearings and NOK seals. the marlin HD inner axles seals are a great upgrade since they can deal with a lot more deflection than the oem style seals.
i have all these items in stock.

Use Kurt. You will also need a brass drift, & an internal jaw puller slide hammer to get out the bearings in the rear axle tube. Have fun..lots of little things have probably been neglected on the old girl

Good to know that you sell these kits too Georg, hate to take business away from Kurt but I got to support my old stomping ground vendors!!!

thats ok greg, Im covering georg since hes in my stomping grounds! I was impressed with the prices and quality from georg. 200 bucks or so for the knuckle rebuild kit, new tranny mount, grease and some other goodies plus his knowledge. and buy a 54mm socket for the wheel bearing nuts.

I have a couple trusted vendors. Kurt and Georg have consistently delivered great service and a considerable amount of help to members on this board.

I'd recommend either one of them without a single thought.

Thanks guys for all of the input. I knew when I posted this that there would be great info coming in. It makes it somewhat easier to make a decision now.

Also saw on the Marlin site about a knuckle alignment too. How important is it to align these up and get the bearing preload? This is my first time doing a knuckle rebuild and I want to do it the right way. Pretty pricy on the tool from there site. I also downloaded and printed off the procedure that was listed from the FSM on how to do it with the SST Knuckle Tool.

You only need the alignment tool if you're swapping the knuckles from another axle. When you remove the shim packs, keep them together (i.e. drivers' side - top, passenger side - top, etc.), and put them back on the same way they came off.

This seems like a very important tip! would have never known that
