Years later….. when you sell your rig, all the anti theft stuff that you so cleverly engineered into it will become an F-ing nightmare to the new owner.
Case in point:
I bought my’87 FJ60 in 2008 from a friend of mine. He was an electrical engineer of some kind and when he sold me the truck, he told me that underneath the fuse box lid was a toggle switch and a tiny button. These were to control the AT system. He told me that “off” was really “on”, and that if I ever disconnected the battery, it would short circuit the starting system and cause the horn to blast off and on, etc. Now I forgot to tell you that I live on a farm, 13 miles from the nearest town. We leave the keys in most of our vehicles here. So the anti theft system in my rig has been never been a problem until now. The tiny button that was supposedly a reset button, I’ve had to press while turning the key to start the engine. About 6 months ago the plastic cap on the button popped off, revealing a very small spring that had a plastic pin, or plunger inside it. No problem, I just had to be careful when pressing it. Well, I’m sure you can guess that the spring finally boinged out! And into the snow and mud that’s on the ground here in March.
The button was useless and broken so I clipped the wires that were attached to the back. I thought maybe I could twist the two wires together and perhaps that would fix it. Nope. Not at all. I can see the wires disappearing into the space covered by the plastic panel against the wall.
Fortunately a friend of mine who has rebuilt several FJ60s and is kind of an off the books mechanic, is coming over soon to put a new starter in it. He said he can hopefully figure it out. I’m crossing my fingers. Especially after reading the comments here I am wondering if anyone can figure this one out. My friend who sold me the rig, and installed all the anti theft stuff, has destroyed his mind by almost drinking himself to death, so I can’t get any information from him. He also installed a 12” sub woofer in the rear inside panel, a big black power amp under the driver seat, and a small black gizmo under the fuse box that has a plug with a bunch of wires coming out, and heading to who knows where.
If you’re still reading this, thanks, I know I’m almost ranting! But my point is this: whatever crazy stuff you do to your Landy, someday, someone will have to undo it. And it might be a huge problem for them. Like the problem I’m having now can be traced back to 1987. The person who thought it up didn’t leave any instructions, bypass directions, nothing at all. Now nobody could steal it unless they towed it away. It’s dead in the barn now.
