Hey guys, first post here. Just looking for some clarification on the different tcases out there. I'm new to Cruisers, always been a Samurai guy.

I've got a 77 BJ40 I'm building. Has a siezed B and a 4 speed. Usual rot covered up with checker plate, but looks pretty decent on the outside. Picked the whole thing up for $500. So a few days ago I found my parts truck. 82 BJ60 with a 3B and 5 speed. Pretty rotten, no clutch (master/slave issue I think), no brakes. It had been sitting across the street from my friends house for years, probably hadnt moved in 5 years. Talked to the owner who happened to be moving at the end of the month, and got the whole truck for $300. We had it fired up in no time with a couple of fresh batteries.

So I got a little lost of the 5 speed swaps when it came to tcases, and the split vs non-split cases. From what I understood the 5 speed wont bolt to my older split case in the 40? But is there any reason I couldnt use the tcase from the 60, which should be the non-split style? Assuming I got that right. Is there any difference in gearing between the two?

Still trying to figure out my options. I'm not sure which 4 speed I have yet. The one with the lower first gear (H41?) would be nice in the bush, and just bolting the 3b in would sure speed things up. But I have yet to actually drive a Land Cruiser (40 or 60), and it seems the 5 speed is the popular option.

Thanks for any info.

All 60's had split cases connected to a 19 spline output on the tranny. Gas and diesel used the same tcases. I don't know what the spline count was on a 77 BJ40... I'm a wagon guy.

Did the B engine use the same input shaft and spline count as the 3B? My 3B uses a 21 spline input shaft. One of the 40 guys should know if your existing tranny would bolt to the 3B

If the 3B already is bolted to a 5 speed that works, just keep them together and use them in the 40. H41 shares the same first four gears as the H55 (the 5 speed)

Gearing in the split cases varied a bit. My 82 BJ60 had either a 1.9 or 2.27 low range. Didn't have a chance to count the gears and now it is in an FJ62 in Florida.

There are also variations in model years for splitcases in wagons. Odd that an 82 has a 5speed as I didn't think they were available until the 83 model year. This was when the tcases were changed to accomodate them.

I would call John at Radd Cruisers as he is in Duncan if I remember correctly, search the vender section to get his number or try this www.raddcruisers.ca

Hmm I better look into it further if its a 5 speed. I asked the guy he said yeah, but he also gave me 2 different stories as to why it was parked both times I saw him. I thought I could find 5 and reverse but the shift is pretty sloppy maybe it is a 4 afterall.

Either way the engine is the most important part and it runs so I'm quite pleased.

Look under the rig and see if it has the spacer between the tcase and the tranny. Next reach up and see if you can feel the shift mechanism on the spacer. The shifter rod for 5th comes out the back of the top cover on the tranny.

Either way the rig is a deal for the price you paid

Your '77 BJ-40 came with a one piece T-case (and a parking brake on the T-case).

The BJ-60 has a split case T-case (and no parking brake).

But, I would personally swap the whole 3B/H55f/T-case combo into your BJ-40, and deal with the parking brake issue one of three ways:
  1. Buy one of the very few and hard to find Toyota split case parking brakes (have to find an HJ-47, probably looking to Australia)
  2. Add an aftermarket T-case parking brake (like from TSM, MAF or somesuch)
  3. Find a late model 40 rear axle with an integrated parking brake and swap the axle itself. This option would give you the strongest parking brake by far.

Other than that, you've got to fabricate a crossmember for the H55f from the 60 (can use the 60 crossmember and modify it easily) and do something brilliant with the driveshafts. Either get the ones from the BJ-60 shortened for the 40, or swap flanges between the two, or..... Either way not a big deal.

Why no pictures of said 40???

sounds like a fun project. Nice if it is the 5 speed, has a good low first.

I put the 60 guts into a 79 bj40 many moons ago, nice upgrade. Most of the parts on the b will swap right over onto the 3B, so you should be able to get around the 24v thing

(assuming your 40 is 24v?)

I'm in chemainus and work in nanaimo, give me a shout if you need a hand or something.

cheers,
ryan

Thanks Kynot I'll get my fat head under there and look for the extra shift linkage for 5th.

Heres a couple quick pics I have of the 2.

The 40 as it sits for now.
