Is there an advantage to install an front 60 axle on a 40? (1982 BJ42)

I wondered...

Are the leafs springs support are in the same place?

I have to redo my suspension and I have an extra 60 axle in my garage.

I'm just curious

wider footprint, stronger

You'll have to either outboard your springs or get a kit to add 3" to the axle (includes a new inner) so you can center the axle on the frame and have the right spring clear the pumpkin. I think Ruff Stuff has the kit or my son has one that he may not be using.

OK !

That answer the question.

Merci !

A 60 has a wider track allowing you to turn full lock with 35" tires. The inside of a 35 hit the leaf springs ( with 40 axles)
at full lock. The wider axle also gives more leverage on the springs for better articulation, more stability cornering and on sidehills. The 60 rear has far a far superior brake setup. Even if you don't have the means to do the front, I highly recommend swapping the rear. It only involves relocating the perches and swapping in your third member.
The front is more involved. The cleanest way is to lengthen the short side

The axle below is a 40, lengthened both sides. Only the short side of a 60 axle needs lengthened.
The extension sleeve is machined to slip into the axle and the knuckle ball slips into it so it's self aligning.
A longer short side axle shaft is required. Extending the short side of a 60 axle will allow you to turn full lock
with 37"'s in an FJ40

also with the rear diff getting the handbrake on the rear end is better imo

im doing it cause since i went to a 5 speed i no longer have a handbrake so throw in a 60 diff get wider track and handbrake at the same time sounds good too me

If you already have disc brakes, no.

No.

No???? I'd seriously like to know why you think no poser.

EDIT: let me rephrase... I'd like to know your opinion of why you don't think there is any advantage.

I run a 60 series rear for the wider foot print and less rubbing when flexed as well as less panel damage to the rear quarters.

Have to disagree with Poser

Front I still run 40 series.

Some work involved and welding too. Is it worth it YES!

I like the wading depth sticker.

I added trail gear 1.5" wheel spacers, mainly to clear the calipers when I swapped in my axles off my 79 donor. Now I have the same width as the 60 series with way less work. Really like the wider stance, now I just need some fender flares for the rear.

Are you also using the sway bars used in the rear 60 axles, also which e-brake did you use??
How does it ride?
Are the 40 perches wider than the 60?
BTW, Nice looking 40 Matt.
