Hi all,

Thinking of buying an FJ. I am a bit annoyed that I cannot get a MT with part time 4wd. Is there a reason, technically, why Toy did not make this an option? I just don't need to turn all that stuff when on the hwy.

Ideas? Have others griped about this?

There is no reason why they couldn't. We were trying to figure out the combo (AT with part time and MT with full time) and couldn't see why except maybe Toyota was trying to twin a particular traction style (the center diff) with the MT for marketing purposes.

Options exist in the aftermarket: you can change out the stock tcase for a Lefty from Inchworm - that's a part time tcase that can work with the MT. I have one on my MT FJC. (Has other advantages such as you can put a lower ratio in the reduction box - but unless you put the ADD system in, you don't get quite the fuel efficiency advantages that the stock part time has...)

Personally I love the setup on my FJC with the 6-speed MT, but that's just me I guess.

Oh, I would like it too. But I don't understand why they did not make the MT available with part time 4wd. That's dumb and frustrating. We need all the mileage we can get with these vehicles and that would have been a great place to start.

AT w/o Full Time ...

Not being an expert ... this is just a guess from a rambling computer nerd (who happens to have an FJ). Perhaps the reason you can't get full time 4wd with the AT has something to do with the size of the transmission coupled with adding the differential to the tcase?

Could be. I have no idea personally,

What I am looking for is part time with a manual trans. That was the standard config for all sorts of vehicles for decades, but we can't get it on an FJ.

Loving my 6-speed MT. Most fun driving I've ever had, as DD or on the trail. As for MPGs, had a 5.9L V8 Dodge Ram 1500 before, so I picked up a couple extra MPGs just by getting this rig. Never looked back.

I had a rental Ram/Hemi for a week... Boy do those things go through gas!

I think an even bigger problem with MPG (especially on the freeway) is the aerodynamics more then anything. Personally, I would like the front windshield to be a little bit more angled as it would also help with upward visibility. Even some more aerodynamic fenders would help with both those aspects too, but then you'd really be messing with the looks of the vehicle.
 
A related question is, if you get the automatic, with the part time 4WD, does it disconnect the TC from the front driveshaft in 2WD, but leave the diff and axles connected to the wheel?

If so, can you get hubs for the front that will disconnect the wheel from the axle?

It's a goos question .. does any have a hubs set to swap in front of the FJC . ?

I emailed these guys:

Solid Axle Industries

and they said they are considering a version of their Spyntec conversion hub (the ones that still keep the computer happy with the hubs unlocked) for the FJ Cruiser if there is enough demand.

remember, these would not work with the MT! It does not have part time 4WD...

I'm going to post a new thread about this, just to keep it straight.

The ADD system on the auto (can't remember what the acronym stands for) automatically disconnects one side of the front axle from the diff. The front drive shaft does not rotate. It is designed to minimize the amount of "drag spin" in the non driven (in 2wd) front drive train.

Do you know how this works? I think you are right because there is less rolling resistance in the AT than the MT.

Auotmatic Disconnect Differential, IIRC;)

the reason you can have part time in the MT is the center diff.
it esentially acts the same as an axle diff.
there has to be traction on both ends for it to work right.

pull the front shaft, i bet it wont go no where.

But it appears that the AT FJC's do just fine off road, so why build it that way?

Am I missing something?
