I took a chance and ordered these shallow mount 6.5 infinity speakers with 5.25 adapter for gm vehicle. Figured I could make it work.

I did have to remove the rectangular speaker cover from the door card.

There are two sets of adapters ..one mounts to the door and the other on top of that to mount the speaker. So the smaller diameter one mounts to the door and the larger ring mounts to the smaller one. Then the door card goes on and the speaker and speaker cover actually sit on the outside of the door card but screws go through to the mounts.

Here's a pictorial of what I did.

Cut off all outer tabs on both mounts.

smaller ring to the left goes to the door first.

Temporarily screwed the two mounts together where the speaker and cover will mount to them. Then mounted to the door. Trimming as necessary

Notice the small legs of the inner mount. they should touch the metal door and sit flush. Some trimming may be necessary. Shave the outer ring where it bumps the door metal.

Once the mounts are in the door the speaker screws come back out. So the drill is going thru both mounts and the metal door. then screw it all together and remove the vice grips. Make sure you put the mount screws in a diff location other than where the speaker will mount. And you can find recessed areas in the mount so the screw head is not sticking out(look at where the drill bit is). Make sure the speaker screws are located at n/e, s/e, s/w and n/w locations not 12/3/6/9 oclock. if you want your speaker to sit straight..with the logo horizontal.

worked on the door cards, removing the speaker covers from the back of the door card. Prying w/flat head screwdrivers. marking the cut from inside the hole. Cutting the hole in the door card.

Make sure the door card is all the way on and push a few snaps in before tracing the hole

After this I used a soldering iron to burn/melt holes in the door card, then screwed on the speaker and cover. Finally finish by pressing on the cover screen.

Shots of the speakers straight on and from the side. Will need to get some gray plastic push in clips to cover the old speaker cover holes.

Replaced my escutcheons and window cranks too.

Nice job g-man. Looks like it should.
I took a little different route as I was worried about mounting depth and interference with the regulator.

Gotta have good speakers. What seems loud at idle is too quiet once you get moving. Sound deadening must be nice.
