Couple of items/reminders as we close in:
1) Bring rain gear, it can rain a lot at times during the summer days in the mountains. Even just a cheap rain suit will be good so that you can at least get out of truck on the trail.
2) firewood. Please bring some. Please purchase somewhere in the area to help combat contamination. Silverton or Ridgeway (depending on how you come in) should have some.
3) working CB. Can't say this enough. It makes it so much better.
4) Clothing for all temps. Definitely don't forget a jacket.
5) camp chairs, don't leave home without them
6) if you have an ez up style awning you can bring/fit, please do. These can be really helpful if we get some long lasting rain at camp.

That's all for now!! Thx

If there is a trail you want to see, let us know and we'll do our best to make sure you get on it. If that means we run two staggered groups, we'll try to do that.

I would sure like to run Clear Lake on Friday, California/Corkscrew on Saturday and Black Bear on Sunday. I picked my trails a little too late and Clear Lake and California/Corkscrew were already full so I picked Ophir to Last Dollar on Friday, Black Bear on Saturday and Imogene/Last Dollar on Sunday. Basically, I'd like to try a different trail each day, start off with some easier trails and drive any trails that might have some good fishing opportunities. My Guide to Colorado Backroads and 4-Wheel-Drive Trails says Clear Lake is great for fishing. Either way, I picked my trails too late so if I can't get on the full trails it's no big deal. I'm just stoked to be going and driving some of the trails that inspired me to get a 100 series in the first place.

Unfortunately 30 trucks on a trail wouldn't lead to anyone having a very good trip nor would it allow us to stay in good standing with the Forest Service. There are stipulations to the permit that do not prohibit 30 plus trucks on a trail. It's not fair to others, who are not part of this event. Imagine getting stuck behind a 30 vehicle group, no thanks. If you checked out any of our old trip reports, we have always split into groups and this year was always planned to be the same. I apologize if that wasn't clear, but I'm 99% sure that you will be much happier with the setup we have than you would be with all of us on same trail, regardless of if you are a "team player". Check out www.100sinthehills.com and go to the Participants page for trail sign up. Thanks

Blue,

Sorry, my fault for just being too excited, (just couldn't wait to get out of Stockton CA.) and didn't read the directions carefully...Just signed up for a few trails. I'll stay quite for now on...

I guess I won't need to get my fishing license since Clear Lake is full:( and the stream near camp is full of minerals.

Have a great day:)

It's definitely not great for fishing, but you can catch a few smallish fish. (See above, I posted about Clear Lake the other day)

I scouted out some new fishing spots/possible HIH trails this week. More to come on that.

Current Area Conditions:

-Clear Lake is still blocked by snow and the lake still has ice.

-Poughkeepsie Gulch opened on Thursday and there was a roll-over on The Wall on Friday. Be careful and watch your spotter.

-Black Bear is open all the way and is in pretty good shape. There are some very deep ruts and mud holes just past the summit. Some are deep enough that you'll drag bottom and hit your bumpers. The large rock on the 4th switchback that pushed you towards the edge has been removed. The 2nd switchback is a little more narrow this year (Yikes). The Steps are in good shape and I led a group down in the rain with no issues. You will slide about 3 feet in one area. Watch your spotter and for the love of everything, TURN OFF YOUR LOCKERS while descending and making tight turns. I watched a Jeep very nearly roll because they had their front locker on. Then, the axle snapped because they tried to navigate a switchback while locked. When they tried to get out via 2wd, they promptly broke a u-joint. Done...
With that being said, unless you or your passengers are deathly afraid of heights, please join me for a Black Bear run. It is the one trail that you do not want to miss. The group I led down yesterday had very little experience (except for my tail gunner who has been wheeling with @spressomon for years, 'nuff said). Some were barely built and everyone did an amazing job and took every hard line.

Dan, Big P was a great trail partner and I'm looking forward to traveling with him again.

-Imogene and Ophir are open and clear. The water on Imogene is still pretty deep.

-Soup or Secret is clear and open

There is still a fair amount of snow up high and the flowers are just starting to pop. It has rained for a little while every day. Black Bear had some very nasty lightning yesterday. Please stay in your vehicle during a lightning storm, especially when we're above tree-line. No photo is worth the risk. People are killed every year here from lightning strikes above tree-line. It's still pretty chilly at night, be prepared for 40 degrees or less.

There has been more bear activity this year than in previous years. A bear ripped open a few tents in a relatively clean camp near Ouray (about 100 yards from my camp) The only food item they had left out was a small bag of coffee beans. The bear destroyed that tent, ate the beans, then tore the other tent apart. I do not expect us to see a bear in our camp, but please keep your area clean.

EDIT: It also helps that @bluecruiser stays up around the fire until 3 or 4am, so that's a good bear deterrent. Honestly, I would be amazed if we had a bear in our camp. I have been camping in a very primitive area where 4WD is required just to reach. Ironton is not really a bear haven and I bet we could leave honey sandwiches out all night without issue. But, please don't test that theory.

Just the kind of thing you would like to hear about that trail! :)

Hah, yeah especially as I sit at work and watch youtube videos of people navigating this on 4 wheelers and I say to myself "that is tiiiiiiiight" in both the cool and terrifying sense. :) I can't wait fellas! Thank you again for making this all happen. I think everyone around me (both co-workers and friends) would like me to just get there so I stop talking about it non-stop. Just wait until I have pictures and memories to share!

It's reassuring to know we will be out there with people as experienced as you guys. As a newcomer I'm looking forward to the small trial groups as I will constantly be asking questions, about everything. I believe the intimate vibe of this event will really help guys like myself have the chance to learn from more experienced drivers on an individual basis.

Being totally new to events such as this, going into it we really have no idea what to expect. However knowing how hard the directors are working and seeing non-director previous attendees stepping up to the plate gives us a pretty good sense of the friendly atmosphere of HIH. 5 more days of classes/work, 3 days of packing, and we will be on our way!
I second the comments here 100%. I grew up with Jeeps and back in the 90's I spent a lot of time, and attended a lot of events, in Tellico (before it was closed). From what I recall, those events were fun but not at all family / children friendly. Fast forward 20 years later.......I have not driven off road in many years, married, 2 children 3 and 5 (our 5 year old has CP and has only been walking for a year or so), and I have a totally different set of priorities.

I have owned a 100 for about a year and can't express the level of excitement I feel about this HIH. Having spent months reading about the past events and coordinating my schedule to allow us to attend this year's event, I can't express enough thanks to the directors and sponsors for the resources put in to pull this off. I feel 100% comfortable with the experience of the trail leaders and am glad that I am able to introduce my children to such a magical place in this small, safe setting. The size and structure of the event, and the focus on making this event family friendly speaks volumes to the character of everyone involved. We look forward to meeting everyone and joining the HIH family. Thank you, again, to the directors, sponsors, and everyone else involved! See you all soon.

Quick sidebar. If anyone here has a spare passenger side front fender for an 80 series that you are looking to offload, please PM me.

If you find one in pretty much any direction I am sure someone coming will be traveling within that vicinity, and can scoop it up for you.

Yes already need to give a huge thanks to the people that make this happen and keep it this way. I'm sure during and after the event I won't be able to offer enough appreciation. I did some of the Hot Rod Power Tour stuff awhile back but it is just too big now so this will be awesome.

I sent in another trail request switching to Imogene from Clear Lake to let someone else in on that run since it's full. Since I have never been I have no preference (well I do want to do Black Bear) only don't tell my wife that I changed as she wanted Clear Lake since it was the easiest run to start for her and the kids. Then I realized I may have screwed it up by sending it in again-sorry. Just send me to the back of the classroom.

I have told my kids about all the other kids that are around their age but my 8 year old girl asked if there were any other girls around her age as all she has heard about is boys.

Finished the timing belt/water pump, upper front arms and lower ball joints yesterday. Found a laptop for $50 on ebay 5 minutes away and have Techstream downloaded. Will see if I can check my pressures to set my torsion bars since they have been off. Then will have it aligned. Should leave the weekend with getting the oil/coolant changed, wiring up the lights for the RV and testfitting that.

Can't wait for chili and all the other food in the cool mountain air. As it was 100 in my garage all weekend looking at the weather in the mid 40's just blows me away. The day we leave it's going to be 106!

Can't wait for cooler temps

My daughter is 12 and enjoys playing with other kids of all ages. My 13 y.o. son is also going to be there.

I may have missed it, but are there directions to camp?

We will post some coordinates soon. It's easy to find from either Silverton or Ouray.
