It'll get a lot better once you leave the PRC. Small town southern Colorado won't be the cheapest in the area but I'll bet it's well below $4/gallon. It's about $2.50 - $2.70 in ABQ.
About 2 or 3 moths ago it went down like crazy and I actually got hopeful it would hold up for this trip but I should've known better!
I do miss CO gas prices! Remember after we moved there I spent some time texting pump pics to friends here in CA! Now I'm back and it's not so funny anymore!

@kelly saad - we do have a limit of how many can do a trail in a day due to FS guidelines. Also, a trail day with 20 trucks isn't all that exciting for anyone. When we get to camp, we will have a list and we will go from there. Please don't think you "missed" anything. If you have any concerns, feel free to PM me or email me at info@100sinthehills.com thanks!

Blue,

I wasn't aware that we had to sign up for which trail we wanted to run... If that's the case, well I guess I'm a little late. I was under the impression that we keep this at a 30 rig min to be able to enjoy all the trails for the three day trip. If I remember correctly the schedule was 3 trails a day Friday-Sunday as a group?

Yes, 20-30 trucks can cause a traffic jam up there... but the Lone Ranger from Stockton wants to experience every trail with our Hundreds Family.

I'm a little concern. Only because I'm a team player.

Where do I find this trails list to sign up?

Thanks in advance...

Unfortunately 30 trucks on a trail wouldn't lead to anyone having a very good trip nor would it allow us to stay in good standing with the Forest Service. There are stipulations to the permit that do not prohibit 30 plus trucks on a trail. It's not fair to others, who are not part of this event. Imagine getting stuck behind a 30 vehicle group, no thanks. If you checked out any of our old trip reports, we have always split into groups and this year was always planned to be the same. I apologize if that wasn't clear, but I'm 99% sure that you will be much happier with the setup we have than you would be with all of us on same trail, regardless of if you are a "team player". Check out www.100sinthehills.com and go to the Participants page for trail sign up. Thanks

Just curious as my parts guy (Toyota of Dallas) is at the FJ deal in Ouray and he said they had 550 entries that sold out in 20 minutes-How do they manage that on the trails?
I"ll be good with whatever since I have never done anything like this so if we need to move to a different group no problem-just probably need to pass on Pough. I went with Clear Lake as my wife wanted the easiest trip for the first day but then picked Black Bear for Saturday as I want to do it after watching videos-family will probably get out and walk. Sunday didn't pick anything but I'm hoping that the rest of the family enjoys it enough that they want to do another day-fingers crossed. I'm hoping that if we decide to do more trails on Sunday that we can still get in on one of the runs?

Also, probably will learn this info. while up there but what is the quickest trail to get from Ouray to Telluride and how long will that take? We are meeting my parents on Monday in Telluride and will be at the RV park in Ouray. I would rather drive via a trail than the highway and then see if my parents would like to do a mountain trail so would like a suggestion on an easy trail leaving Telluride but coming back to Telluride.

Really good to see some other young kiddo's on the trip. We have a 4 yr old boy, 8 yr old girl, and the 17 yr old girl. Any suggestions on things to bring for them to play with and keep them entertained please let us know. Will be bringing soccer/football/nerf balls/bat/coloring books etc.

Yes, FJ Summit is going on right now in Ouray. Think it's about 300 trucks and they have multiple runs that leave at staggered times throughout the day. An event like that requires a ton of volunteers to pull off. People have to go pre run all trails and they have a committee of folks heading that great event up. We have two people organizing and we always wanted to stay small so you can actually meet everyone there. I think the shortest trail time wise back from telluride to Ouray would be Last Dollar or Imogene. You can definitely go a lot faster on Last Dollar. Even the highway from Telluride to Ouray has some pretty epic views. As far as trails, Sunday has traditionally been pretty much a "let's do what most people want to do". The trail selections were to provide us a reference for what people wanted and how we needed to plan to recruit trail leaders. Yes, small kids are good to see, they will have a blast! See you in Ouray!

Did somebody ordered fresh fish for the potluck on friday night?
Went out with my father in law and one of his friends this morning and caught some inhabitants of 120' deep water!
Each one of us went home with about 25 to 30 lbs of fish! (and I meant clean, not whole fish) :) we did also cast for halibut but nothing came up.
Will have some of this for the friday dinner for sure!

About the FJ Summit comments above and about our HIH trail selection.

I am here for the FJ Summit right now. Camping as I type this. HIH and FJS are two totally different events. I spotted folks down Black Bear all day yesterday and was a Black Bear Trail Leader today.

I probably spotted 70 trucks down yesterday. We never want HIH to be that big. We want small groups, no delays, experienced trail leaders, etc. There were 6 Black Bear runs today. 10 trucks on each run, staggered 30 mins apart. The first 2 groups got bunched up at the pass. It took us 9 hours to do BB and Ophir today. That's a long day. Too long.

FJ Summit is a fantastic event and I will continue to lead and be a trail ambassador, but HIH is the total opposite. With just Chris and I this year, it's been hard for us to find qualified trail leaders. Even the FJS is having a hard time with leaders. Trails like Black Bear are dangerous and we want very experienced trail leaders for that run.

If there is a trail you want to see, let us know and we'll do our best to make sure you get on it. If that means we run two staggered groups, we'll try to do that.

I ran Black Bear probably 15 times last year. I bet I spotted over 100 vehicles down. I've already done it 3 times in the last 3 days. If anyone else feels comfortable leading that, please let me know and I'll take something else. We have a lot of first timers this year and I very much enjoy showing new folks that trail, so no complaints. I will lead at least 1 Black Bear run for our event, but right now I'm scheduled to lead it Saturday and Sunday.

Stan, I'm sure it is not said often enough: Thank you.

This will be my second HIH so I kind of know what to expect. I really appreciate all the hard work that you and others (Chris, Jonathan) put into this event this year and past years. The small size of the event is really enjoyable because it just feels like you've gone camping and wheeling with a bunch of friends. Our first experience was HIH2013 and my entire family was really bummed that we missed it last year due to a conflict with a large family vacation.

And I don't want to forget thanking the sponsors. You also help to make this event truly remarkable with your support and donations.

I can't imagine getting stuck (again) behind more than 1/2 dozen trucks :D

3rd year for me and having done Black Bear for the first time last year, I can't tell you how much I appreciate Stan spotting us down the steps and a certain tight spot on the trail (where a Jeep rolled right after the HIH4 event). If it's your first time down Black Bear, you definitely do not want to feel pressured to get through it with others backing up behind you. I do not recall the trail itself being terribly technical, but would say it is completely mentally exhausting (particularly if you have passengers that are not exactly thrilled to be there....enough said about that).

As Marc said above, thank you Stan, Chris and Sponsors for making this happen. And, thank you to the previous organizers and Sponsors for putting on the past events. I appreciate the small nature of HIH and understand that even though it is limited in size, it is still a huge effort to make happen.

And Stan, let me know if you need someone to lead the Bloomer line....I'm your man! ;)

It's reassuring to know we will be out there with people as experienced as you guys. As a newcomer I'm looking forward to the small trial groups as I will constantly be asking questions, about everything. I believe the intimate vibe of this event will really help guys like myself have the chance to learn from more experienced drivers on an individual basis.

Being totally new to events such as this, going into it we really have no idea what to expect. However knowing how hard the directors are working and seeing non-director previous attendees stepping up to the plate gives us a pretty good sense of the friendly atmosphere of HIH. 5 more days of classes/work, 3 days of packing, and we will be on our way!

Thanks Stan and Chris! Sorry we won't see you, Jonathan, this year! I would be happy to lead or be a gunner on any trail except Black Bear, if you guys need some help! Other notes...Pork Shoulder is being smoked as I type! It will be pulled, bagged and thrown in the freezer, for the pot luck on Friday night.

I haven't seen the request for everyone to bring some firewood for the community fire. If you are traveling from outside of CO, simply pick up some bundled wood at a gas station or store as you get within an hour or two from Ouray.

Exactly why I am coming is the small group to learn and not the FJ deal-I figured with that many trucks it would be a cluster but didn't know if it was more of a show and only few people did trails. I'm looking forward to a relaxing fun time enjoying the trails, weather, and campfire time. Having never done anything like this either the small group and leadership really appealed to me.

Bring your wag bags as I'm bringing Chili for Friday night. Showing my kids those fish Paulo-that is awesome. I'm probably getting a little Weber gas grill that anyone can use. Planned to pick up some firewood once in CO.

Now-gotta get out to finish the timing belt, lower control arms, brakes so it can get an alignment-hoping I can get the techstream going somehow to dial in the T bars after having them off.

Goes without saying but it's always good to mention again: Thank you Stan, Chris, Jonathan and Josh for getting this thing started and widening the circle a bit to fit all of us!
Need any help once in camp just say it.
